British illustrator Claire Scully turns her pen-and-ink to Lake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness in a beautifully illustrated book, and will host a discussion event at Sundance Books, Reno, on July 10th. https://www.sundancebookstore.com/event/claire-scully-discussion-and-signing-desolation-wilderness

Scully is an artist with a particular interest in landscape and memory. Desolation Wilderness forms part of her ongoing work looking at how our relationship with the environment and our interactions with place have a profound affect on our own memory and emotions.

Drawn from Scully’s memory and imagination of places visited on an American road trip, Desolation Wilderness a collection about the ‘idea’ of place. Each of these landscapes is a starting point to a much bigger adventure that strives to answer the question of what lays beyond the horizon. ‘This can be a bit like playing god in your own universe, creating worlds which otherwise would not exist,’ says Scully of her methods.

Having spent nearly two months in the region in 2017 creating this project, Scully will revisit Desolation Wilderness in summer of 2019 to continue the project. This book is the second part of a series that began in Internal Wilderness, Scully’s 2016 project examining memory and imagination through visual ideas.

“Scully has shown the reader just how important it is to observe and to see that in mother nature’s unobtrusive manner she is beautiful . . . The art by Scully is breathtaking. Altogether, mother nature’s love and our appreciation of her is more than evident in this affecting tome.” (Graphic Policy)
