Event Date:
August 27, 2014 - 6:00pm Looking for a project you can help out with that makes a different? If so, the second Stewards of Stormwater event might be for you.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe is inviting community members to help mark storm drains and prevent pollution from entering Lake Tahoe on August 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tahoe Keys.
The League is hosting the event in partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association.
Lake Tahoe’s communities have outdated storm drain systems that in some cases drain directly into the Lake or its tributaries. Marking storm drains with “Keep Tahoe Blue – No Dumping” markers helps educate the public about protecting our water from illegal dumping.
Volunteers and team leaders are needed to help with installing storm drain markers, sweep debris away from storm drains, pick up trash, and chalk “SOS” and “no dumping” around the storm drains. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes for walking, casual clothes, and sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle. Refreshments will be provided.
“Well over 50 pipes drain directly in Lake Tahoe’s waters, carrying sediment and other pollutants,” said Marilee Movius, community engagement manager of the League.” “The Stewards of Stormwater program is a great way to mobilize locals and we are grateful for our collaboration with these South Lake Tahoe organizations to help do this important work for the lake.”
“The City appreciates the partnership with the League and TKPOA to increase public awareness about preventing pollution of City storm drains and how we all can make a difference in restoring Lake Tahoe’s famous clarity,” said Jason Burke, stormwater program coordinator of the City.
The SOS events in the Tahoe Keys are made possible by generous grants from the TKPOA and Wells Fargo.
“The TKPOA is proud to be partnering with the League in this SOS event,” said Pat Disney, committee member of the TKPOA. “We want our neighbors to remind everyone that what goes in the drain ends up in the lake.”
