Bijou Bike Park: Preventing damage, safety issues and planned updates

Sledders and snowboarders this season were not kind to the new Bijou Bike Park, breaking down banked trails, overturning tables and benches, and leaving the area full of trash.

At Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, City staff, commissions and bike enthusiasts discussed how to ensure the damage and some other issues at the park come to an end.

Olympic course designers creating South Lake Tahoe BMX park

The company that has built the BMX tracks for three Olympics, 40 World Cups and 10 World Championships is in South Lake Tahoe to build the Bijou Bike Park. Alex Fowler of Elite Trax, Inc has been in Rio de Janeiro building the track for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but he is much happier being in South Lake Tahoe creating what bicycle enthusiasts have been envisioning for year.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

Boulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.

What is it?

"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.

Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.

Bijou Bike Park on Tuesday's City Council agenda

The Bijou Bike Park will take a step towards reality on Tuesday if the South Lake Tahoe City Council votes to approve the funding and in-kind services staff is recommending.

Members of the Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) presented the original project to the City back in September of 2011, and since then they've been working non-stop in their efforts to create the park. South Lake Tahoe BMX and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association have been helping BBPA in their efforts.

South Lake Tahoe non-profits want the City's old parking meters

The donation of some of the City of South Lake Tahoe's parking meters will be decided at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Two area non-profits, the SLT Police Canine Association and the Bijou Bike Park Association, would like to have some of them in order to solicit voluntary donations.

The canine group wants two of them, one to place in front of the Regan Beach Dog Water Park and the Bijou Dog Park. The bikers will place theirs at the new Bijou ike Park BMX track. Each group will be responsible for their maintenance and operation.

Op/Ed: "Keep Paid Parking"

Paid Parking Is A User Fee

There are many people in this community that want to see more positive changes made. Those include bike paths, road repair or replacement, more public art, a BMX track, improvements at the Skate Park and other recreational areas. They want more events at Lakeview Commons, like the summer concert series, which the City helps support for the locals and visitors alike. They like the upgrades around Harrison Avenue and free parking lot being built next to the Tribune building. All of these pull millions from the City’s General Fund.
