Inaugural community clean-up day on Saturday

The Clean Tahoe program is organizing the first Spring Clean day in South Lake Tahoe, something they hope will become an annual event in all local neighborhoods.
All community members are welcome to participate at various locations throughout the South Shore on Saturday, May 21 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Cleanup supplies will be provided as well as a free lunch for all volunteers at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach afterward.

Wendy David now South Lake Tahoe mayor, Austin Sass mayor pro-tem

It was a changing of the guard during Monday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. Wendy David moved from her position of mayor pro tem to mayor, and Austin Sass took over the second-in-command duties.

Councilmember Tom Davis, who has served as both mayor and mayor pro tem, was also interested in a fifth term in the pro tem spot but the nod went to Sass.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

Tahoe Chamber announces nominees for Blue Ribbon Awards

The Tahoe Chamber announced the nominations Tuesday for the 2015 Blue Ribbon Awards. There were 150 nominations received from the community for their annual awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses for excellence in service, entrepreneurship and experience among other areas.

Reception kicks off three art exhibits at Lake Tahoe Community College

Long time local artist Ellen Nunes joins Chinese artist Yu Ji and winners from the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Spring Art Show in a trio of art exhibits on campus this fall. To celebrate the three shows, the community is invited to attend the free artist receptions for all three exhibits which will be held simultaneously on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. This gives people an opportunity to meet the artists, see their works up close, and enjoy light refreshments with fellow art lovers.

Great Sierra River Cleanup

Canned food accepted at Fall Festival and Chili Cook-Off for Christmas Cheer

The 4th Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will be held on Saturday, September 12th, from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. at the Recreation Complex on Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

Admission to the event is free. Besides the few dozen local vendors and chili chefs, there will be free games and prizes for the kids, All attendees receive a free door prize ticket for all attendees.

Partnership and collaboration crucial to solving Tahoe’s problems

History shows time and time again our greatest accomplishments at Lake Tahoe are achieved when people work together. In the past, Tahoe was known as a place where unproductive interactions between stakeholders led to a stunning decay in our environment and our economic vitality, creating a region that seemed frozen in time.

We face major environmental challenges at Tahoe, including the uncertainties of climate change. And as Albert Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

Crews clean up South Lake Tahoe beaches

Hundreds of volunteers started cleaning the beaches of South Lake Tahoe after the July 4 fireworks celebration that brought an estimated 100,000-125,000 people to the area. The massive amount of trash left on the beaches in the past caused many local people, groups, agencies and businesses to help educate the public about not trashing beautiful South Lake Tahoe.

Free drop off e-waste materials all weekend in South Lake Tahoe

On Saturday, June 6, e-waste will be collected by Electronic Waste Management at both the South Tahoe Middle School and during Clean Tahoe Day at South Tahoe Refuse. The company will be at the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the dump from 8 a.m. to p.m.

On Sunday, June 7 the company will take collections from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.

Tahoe Bike Challenge bike path cleanup

Join us as we celebrate the Tahoe Bike Challenge with a community BIKE PATH CLEANUP event on Saturday, June 13th from 10am-noon.

Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Then we’ll meet up at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office (2608 Lake Tahoe Blvd.) for a free lunch, raffle and celebration after 12pm. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided!

Community Cleanup Day on Saturday, June 6

It's that time of year again when you can take a vehicle full of trash to the dump for only $5. Clean Tahoe's Annual Clean Up Day is on Saturday, June 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Car and truck loads are just $5 for California residents; $10 for truck with trailer and Nevada residents.

New rules for South Lake Tahoe vacation home rentals

There was standing room only at Tuesday's City Council meeting as changes to the current Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance were on the agenda.

Most of the audience was from the real estate and home rental management companies, both of whom felt there would be a lot of loss should a stricter policy be enforced.

With empty lots in the South Lake Tahoe area owned by various agencies and private owners, the public doesn't know who to report incidents or situations to unless they are marked.

In order to help the public, the California Tahoe Conservancy began posting property tags today to help the public better identify its lands on the South Shore.

Tahoe Bike Challenge Starts on Saturday

Join hundreds of your friends, neighbors, co-workers during the 2014 Tahoe Bike Challenge, an annual event that encourages Lake Tahoe residents to get out of their cars and onto bikes.

The event starts off on Saturday with a Bike Trail Clean Up Day. Anyone can join them at three locations after signing up,and lunch is even included. Meet at Sierra Nevada Alliance at 2311 Lake Tahoe Blvd, Los Angeles and Hwy 50 by the fire station or behind Clean Tahoe, 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Lunch will be served after the clean up day at the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Barton Hospital Now Smoke Free; 8 Week Smoking Cessation Class Offered

Starting April 1, all Barton Health buildings became smoke free. The smoking and tobacco ban includes all Barton Health facilities, parking lots, grounds, and Barton Memorial Hospital. All patients, visitors, medical staff, vendors, and employees will not be allowed to smoke at Barton. This includes the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, marijuana smoking, and smoke-free tobacco products such as chewing tobacco. The one exception will be for the two current patients at the Skilled Nursing Center who smoke. No further smoking patients for the center will be accepted.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council made appointments to the Parks and Recreation, Clean Tahoe, City Lay Member Appointee to the TRPA Advisory Planning, and El Dorado Commission on Aging at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Lake Tahoe agency helps families provide for a better Christmas

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency staff dug into their wallets and scoured shopping and grocery stores continuing the tradition of bringing a little cheer to local children and families in need over the holidays.

This year staff provided gifts of clothes and toys to 35 foster children ages 4 – 17 through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Bonanza Park at South Lake Tahoe celebrates grand opening

UPDATE MONDAY: Saturday's grand opening of Bonanza Park brought community members of all ages to hear the dedication from Chuck Scharer, President and CEO of Edgewood Companies and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Claire Fortier.
Youth immediately began playing on the park equipment and the basketball court was ready to host its first game while hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for the crowd of families and dignitaries to enjoy.

Livestrong, American Century give $100,000 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

The holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”

Congregation strives to bring even more 'Unity' to the South Shore

Unity at the Lake began as a small study group in Karen Martin's living room and 17 years later is a thriving, diverse and open spiritual community that well over a hundred locals and visitors call their spiritual home. Their spiritual leaders, Stew and Hillary Bittman, are currently in the process of becoming ordained Interfaith Ministers. Unity has published the "Daily Word" since 1924.
