The popular "Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch Series" will feature a panel discussion on transit options to trailheads, and how they can be improved upon.

This panel will discuss barriers to improving transit to trailheads and other dispersed recreation areas, new plans in the works, the role of technology in improving transit, and how different groups can work together to improve transit.

As part of an effort to begin a countywide strategic planning initiative to formulate a long term sustainable broadband strategy, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors is planning a workshop to examine the state of broadband service in the County and its impacts on businesses and residents. The workshop will occur on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. in the County Board Chambers located at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville.

The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association will host an expert panel and public workshop on August 11 on their plan to fight aquatic invasive weeds, which will be the best opportunity for interested community members to learn more about the problem and proposed solution.

The long-range forecast doesn’t bode well for the interior West as it chokes on a fourth year of drought and smoke from wildfires.

With the fire season ramping up and temperatures starting to soar, drought and fire dominated the discussion at the Western Governors’ Association annual meeting being held this week at Incline Village on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, who has chaired the group for the past year, made drought his signature initiative, bringing together water experts and managers to develop best practices for water management and drought preparation.

In light of the recent officer involved shooting in South Lake Tahoe, the discussion about body cameras being worn by local law enforcement has once again surfaced. While there has been discussion by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), according to Lt. Brian Williams, no decisions have been made.

"A large part [of the wearing of cameras] hinges on the State as there may be regulations coming soon," said Williams. He said they have to watch out for taxpayers dollars and not spend money on a system that might not be allowed by state laws.

Once again, an audience full of mainly Realtors and property managers filled the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers as the topic of Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) was on the agenda for discussion.

Renting a vacation home is being increasingly popular in South Lake Tahoe just as in other communities. Many tourists prefer to rent a VHR instead of a traditional motel or hotel room. There are many reasons from enjoying time with family to reunions and wedding parties.

California took the first step June 5 to regulate its nearly 20-year-old medical marijuana industry, one that lawmakers said currently resembles something out of the “wild, wild West.”

AB266 merges what were two competing bills and attempts to set up state regulations that will pass muster with the federal Department of Justice. It was one of dozens of pieces of legislation advancing through the Legislature Thursday as lawmakers faced a Friday deadline to move bills out of their house of origin.

The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee (LTFAC) is scheduled to meet from 9 a.m. to noon, June 22, 2015, at the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96150. LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe.

Items on the agenda include an overview of committee history, review of committee charter, update on status of Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, and discussion of Committee’s future strategy.

South Lake Tahoe can create a sustainable economy if we focus on "active tourism." This was the message relayed by the panel of speakers at Wednesday's Tahoe Talk series at Lake Tahoe Community College.

If the 15 page spread about Lake Tahoe in the May edition of Bike magazine is any indication, people know about the activity/recreation based tourism awaiting them in Tahoe, and they're about to come.

Biking and walking positively contribute to Lake Tahoe's economy, but by how much? This subject will be discussed during May's Tahoe Talks Brown Bag speaker series on May 20, 2015. This will feature a panel discussion on what is currently known about how biking and walking impact Tahoe's economy, and how we can find out more.

John Rice, the VP and General Manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe, will discuss the impacts of weather patterns on an industry that is very dependent on them at the next Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch series.

The public is invited to the April 15 discussion being held in the Aspen Room at Lake Tahoe Community College from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) and its partners continue their lunchtime forum for learning and sharing ideas that strengthen our Tahoe communities.

Topics focus on transportation, environmental, and economic ideas that are pertinent to issues we face today at Lake Tahoe. They are always looking for idea on new topics.

The Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District Boards of Trustees will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, March 24.

During the meeting, two people from the Los Rios Community College will provide an overview of "Get Focused, Stay Focused!" a career and educational course that LTUSD officials hope to bring to South Tahoe High next year.

Motels and hotels being used for long term occupancy is a problem across the country and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

Of the 120 motels and hotels in the city limits, 58 of them are being used for long term occupancy. 1,300 rooms are now rented for long periods of time. These units were not built for people to live in long term as there is no refrigeration or cooking facilities, and many times there are families living in a room meant for just two people for a night or two.

This webinar will include the following: identification of the costs and risks to businesses associated with employing substance abusers; informing employers how to introduce an alcohol and drug testing program; familiarize employers with the state laws of workplace drug testing; and discussion of recent judicial cases challenging an employer’s drug testing policy.

There’s a lot to be learned by studying others’ successes. At the Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch this February, a design engineer for the Federal Highway Administration discussed how modern roundabouts are being used to improve traffic and make roads safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, as well as where they would make the most sense at Lake Tahoe.

On Tuesday the South Lake Tahoe City Council will vote on one person to serve on the TRPA Advisory Planning Commission. Gary Bowen, Carmen Delgado, Tiffany Good, Amanda Thomason and Scott Weavil would all like to serve the two year term.

Also on the agenda will be discussion about the Tahoe Valley Area Plan, a presentation about the raising of fees for stormwater treatment inspections to cover the cost of mandated programs, discussion on the CalTahoe JPA (ambulance service on the South Shore) and review the pay of the City Treasurer.

As South Tahoe Now reported on Wednesday, the autopsy on Dejon Smith was completed in Sacramento and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department was going to release the results Thursday. Out of respect for Smith's family they have delayed that until Friday.

The campaign posters on Measures M, N and O that have plastered the west slope for a few months have now made their way to South Lake Tahoe. But, what are they all about?

Growth, to put it in one word.

On one side you have people who want to have control of growth in the county and not let it go to Sacramento. On the other side there is a grass roots movement to keep all growth out of the county unless Cal Trans says its okay.

Douglas County Commissioners may decide to raise the water rates for the County's Lake Tahoe customers by 25% during their meeting at the lake on Thursday.

The October 16th agenda is full of items pertaining to the South Shore, including a possible decision to merge the Zephyr Cove Water Utility District, the Cave Rock/Uppaway Water Systems, and Skyland Water System and establish the Lake Tahoe Water Utility Fund effective November 1.
