South Lake Tahoe's drug disposal bin deemed successful
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 4:59pmIt may be a simple metal box attached to the wall of the South Lake Tahoe Police station, but what it does can change, or even save, lives.
The South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition bought the box and had it installed in July of this year. Since then it has been emptied three times according to Josh Adler of the SLTPD.
"It has been very successful," said Melody Easton, Coalition Coordinator.
Permanent Drug Disposal Bin Now Available at SLT Police Department
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/22/2014 - 9:08pmThere is now a permanent drug-disposal bin located in the lobby of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department thanks to the collaboration between the Department and the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition. This bin is in a secure location for anyone in the community to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

July 18, 2014 (All day) The South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition would like to extend a huge kudos and recognition to the businesses that attended the ABC educational seminar on Friday July 18th. It was great to see so many businesses educating themselves and their staff on responsible beverage service. These businesses are going the extra mile to avoid selling alcohol to minors and visibly intoxicated community members (both misdemeanor offenses that may result in revocation of their license to sell alcohol).

Some of these community partners include the South Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Public Health, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/22/2014 - 9:32pmThe facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.
Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.
The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:
39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.
Drug Take Back Day Nets Over 50 Pounds of Pills in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 9:50amDuring April's South Lake Tahoe Drug Take Back Day, over 50 pounds of prescription drugs were dropped off anonymously in the bins location in the Safeway parking lot. This is about a 27% increase over last year's efforts.
Getting unused prescription drugs out of the home is a major step in accomplishing two major goals of Drug Take Back Day: Keeping drugs out of the landfills and water systems and keep drugs out of the hands of people who they weren't prescribed for.

Have bottles of prescriptions sitting unused in your medicine cabinet?
A free and anonymous disposal site for expired and unused drugs will be in the Safeway parking lot at 1020 Johnson Blvd. on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of National Drug Take Back Day. The El Dorado County Sheriff's and South Lake Tahoe Police Departments, in conjunction with the South Lake Tahoe Drug Free Coalition will be hosting the event. The Coalition will be on hand to answer any questions or address any concerns the public may have.
South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Seeks Help to Make Lasting Impact in Community
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/10/2014 - 12:19amMelody Easton is here to make a difference. Recently tapped as the coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the action oriented Easton has hit the ground running.
Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant, bringing in $125,000 for each of the next five years to help combat drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of South Lake Tahoe. Once the grant was awarded a coordinator needed to be hired. Easton was hired and the Concordia College graduate and her husband packed up and moved from Portland, Oregon.

Coalition Coordinator Job Opening
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/26/2013 - 11:56amThe Coalition Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of projects, programs and activities to accomplish the mission of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant as established by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (the Coalition) and managed by Tahoe Youth & Family Services. The Coalition Coordinator will mobilize the community to prevent and reduce youth substance use by effectively representing the Coalition and building partnerships and support in the community.
