Senator Reid described Russia's Lake Baikal as the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water, conservation efforts, and compared both Lake Baikal and Lake Tahoe as "two of the fairest places in all of the earth".

Tahoe Fund Raises $55,000 for Critical Tahoe Environmental Projects

Founders Circle members of a Lake Tahoe nonprofit donated $55,000 at Sunday's annual Tahoe Fund Summer Dinner and croquet party for three specific projects that will improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Tahoe Basin. The money raised by the Fund is for shovel-ready public projects that require additional private support to be completed, and was in addition to the more than $120,000 raised by the dinner for the organization.

Tahoe Fund Hosts Croquet Party on August 12

The Tahoe Fund is encouraging supporters of Lake Tahoe to break out their croquet whites for a good cause. The environmental non-profit is preparing for its 2nd Annual Founders Circle Summer Dinner, to be held at Edgewood Tahoe’s historic Friday’s Station on Sunday, August 12th. Lake Tahoe environmental report shows promising results

Several environmental gains over the last five years have been made at the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s “Threshold Evaluation Report” released Wednesday, which highlights water quality as a continued area of concern.

The comprehensive report offers a snapshot of the health of the ecosystem in the Tahoe Basin by documenting the status and trends of more than 100 environmental standards ranging from air and water quality to fish and wildlife. The biggest improvements were documented in air and water quality, and scenic resources.

LTCC grant to help local kids move onward, upward

Lake Tahoe Community College has been awarded a five-year federal grant designed to provide academic support for 500 low-income, first generation college-bound students from South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High. The Department of Education grant will be consist of five annual payments of about $230,000 each, said LTCC spokeswoman Christina Proctor. The college was informed it had been awarded the grant by the offices of California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer.
