Survey finds 18 Million trees died in California in 2018
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/11/2019 - 1:15pmWhile the rate at which trees died in California has slowed, an additional 18 million trees (mostly conifers) have died in the state, bringing a commitment from both the USDA Forest Service and CALFIRE to make forest health their top priority.
The USDA Forest Service announced today over 147 million trees have died across 9.7 million acres of federal, state, local and private lands in California since the drought began in 2010. Since 2016, federal, state, and local partners have felled 1.5 million dead trees, primarily those posing the highest hazards to life and property.
Updated fire plan to be presented at Lake Tahoe Summit
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/06/2015 - 8:43pmAn updated Lake Tahoe Basin Community Wildfire Protection Plan will be presented to the public during the Lake Tahoe Environmental Summit on Monday, August 24, 2015. This new Community Wildfire Protection Plan was collaboratively developed by the 18 member organizations of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) and is the culmination of a three-year planning effort.
Lake Tahoe Has Select Force of Wildland Firefighters
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/09/2014 - 5:55pmLake Tahoe is now home to the Tallac Hotshots, a select force of 20 wildland firefighters from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
The group completed a demanding and extensive certification process on June 19, making them the first Interagency Hotshot Crew from Lake Tahoe.
Formerly the Tallac Hand Crew, the Tallac Hotshots join an exclusive group of roughly 2,000 firefighters across the country.
Prescribed fire plan Wednesday for West Shore Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 03/26/2013 - 2:34pmA prescribed fire is planned on the west shore of Lake Tahoe in the Meeks Bay area beginning Wednesday. About 30 acres will be burned through the remainder of the week, weather permitting, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
