Crews respond to Kyburz, El Dorado National Forest fires
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 4:03pmFirefighters were putting out hot spots this afternoon on a small fire between Highway 50 and Kyburz. According to Capt. Daniel Berlant with Cal Fire, there was a downed, live power line in the area. It was possible the power line was the origin of the flames but that wasn't clear yet, Berlant said. Dry and breeze conditions were also a concern to keep the quarter to half-acre fire from spreading.

Forest Service responds to rekindling of prescribed fire unit on Kingsbury Grade

"The fire is 100 percent contained," said spokeswoman Cheva Heck.

Firefighters stop advance of massive Reno wildfire

Update 5 p.m.: Firefighters have stopped the advance of the fire and are now going back and putting out hot spots. Light snow and lessening winds are helping the efforts. Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said 25 homes have been impacted by the fire. The fire has burned between 1,700 and 2,000 acres. One firefighter has been injured, one person suffered a heart attack and died and more than 4,500 NV Energy customers are without power.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce a promotional ceremony for three new Fire Department Shift Commanders will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011. The ceremony will take place at the City’s Administration Offices (South Lake Tahoe Airport) at 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Being promoted to Shift Commander are Jim Drennan, Rob Hembree and Dan Sullivan. In announcing the appointments, City Manager Tony O’Rourke said, “The three Commanders will have significant responsibilities and have demonstrated the capacity to carry them out. We are pleased to announce their promotions.”

Update 2 p.m.: Fire crews have contained a fire that broke out this morning near Old Clear Creek Road near the top of Spooner Summit, and Highway 50 has reopened.
The fire was last reported to be about 1.5 acres in size, and there was one home in the area that was threatened. Light winds and cool temperatures helped firefighters get a handle on the blaze, with a helicopter dumping water to help out the hand crews on the ground.
