GOP Members Of Congress Ask Governors To Reject Health Exchanges, Nevada Program Already Well Under Way

CARSON CITY – A letter from 12 U.S. Senators and 61 members of the House to the nation’s governors asking them to oppose the creation of health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act comes too late to have any effect in Nevada.

Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe among several Nevada Tourism grant winners

Needed improvements at the Thunderbird Lodge got a lift on Wednesday when the Nevada Commission on Tourism announced the Lake Tahoe site was among several to win an improvement project grant.
Grants were awarded to 19 different projects. The announcement was made by Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.
NCOT's Projects Relating to Tourism Grants program help fund infrastructure improvements that will attract visitors, and after a temporary suspension due to a decline in tourism revenues, the grants were reinstated this year.

Today is the day: South Lake Tahoe bicycle group Slow Rollers is asking the community to come out to its second annual Spirit Bike Parade today and an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the longest single line of bicycles. To beat the record, now held by the city of Davis of 916 bicycles, South Lake Tahoe will have to produce 917 bicycles or more. The event begins at 4 p.m. with a start up at the old Miller's Outpost, South Shore Bikes, 955 Emerald Bay Road. Get there early to register.

Nevada Governor Sandoval Announces Plan With Amazon To Collect State Sales Tax On Web Purchases

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced today that the state has reached an agreement with on-line retailing giant Amazon to begin collecting Nevada sales tax on purchases.

In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. The total grant amount available for 2012 is set at $25,000 and is generally dispersed between five and 10 local organizations.

Tahoe resorts, business outfit vehicle fleets with Lake Tahoe license plate

New Lake Tahoe license plates are appearing on the vehicle fleets of major ski resorts and businesses in the Tahoe Basin, as support for the Tahoe plate program in California and Nevada continues this winter.

Heavenly Ski Resort helped launch the program in 1996 and has 140 vehicles plated for Tahoe. Northstar Resort, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Tahoe Dave’s Skis and Boards have ordered new Tahoe plates.

Meyers residents protest, speed limit hike moves forward anyway

Residents of Meyers met with Caltrans officials Tuesday evening in a public meeting to discuss the proposed raising of the speed limit on Highway 50. More than 50 residents, business owners and families showed up to question the wisdom of the proposal and the survey results themselves. However, the results of the meeting indicate that Caltrans will proceed with the changes and the new speeds posted within two months.

The non-profit Tahoe Fund has engaged Olive Grove Consulting of Belmont, CA to conduct a search for the Fund’s founding Chief Executive Officer (CEO). A $10,000 grant to help the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority develop its sports tourism initiative was among nearly a half-million dollars in rural tourism grants announced Tuesday. As of October 1, nine new inmates have been incarcerated in the El Dorado County jail who would have previously gone to state prison.
