Three near-fatal overdoses in Douglas County - Counterfeit Percocet pills with fentanyl

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In the past 72 hours, three people have had near-fatal overdoses in Douglas County due to fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills being ingested. Deputies were able to quickly administer Naloxone to save the victims.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) warned the public two months ago regarding the counterfeit Percocet pills with fentanyl being sold in the area.

Investigators say they arrest main source of meth, cocaine and heroin to El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A two-month-long investigation into narcotics coming in to El Dorado County culminated with the arrests of one man and two women on February 11, 2020.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) narcotics team executed a search warrant at a home in Los Banos, California. Their investigation had led them to the home where two people, 28-year-old Julio Chavez and 29-year-old Dennise Castro-Lopez, resided. EDSO says the Los Banos residents were the main source of supply of methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin to El Dorado County.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on drug charges; Bail set at $1.5M

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Stuart Robert Miller, 32, was arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) on Saturday, January 11, 2020, after a traffic stop lead to the discovery of a large amount of cocaine (2.25 pounds), a large amount of cash, methamphetamine, and heroin in the vehicle.

The Western El Dorado County Narcotics Enforcement Team (WENET) obtained a search warrant of his home on Glorene Street in South Lake Tahoe. Inside, deputies found a large amount of methamphetamine (approx. 100 grams) and a loaded firearm.

Aryan Brotherhood prison gang drug and murder ring broken up with help of El Dorado County DA's Office

The El Dorado County (EDC) District Attorney's Office recently helped with a state-wide investigation focused on offenders operating a criminal enterprise from both inside and outside state prisons.

Sixteen members and associates of a prison-based gang have been charged after a long-running investigation into drug trafficking and murders inside and outside of California’s prisons.

The EDC DA office's investigative division has the kind of highly trained and experienced detectives that are often called in to help with operations of this magnitude.

Naloxone saving lives locally and across the country

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Naloxone, a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid and heroin overdoses, is carried on police and deputy vehicles, ambulances and fire engines, giving first responders the chance to save lives. The problem of these overdoses is so widespread most medics and ambulances have administered the medication dozens of times, even in South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding counties.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Understand more about the opioid epidemic at the next Barton Health Wellness Lecture on Thursday, February 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, 2170B South Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Dr. Matthew Wonnacott will lead the lecture and cover topics including how opioids became an epidemic and what kind of help is available locally for those fighting an addiction to the drug.

Column: SLTPD and EDSO saves woman's life with arrest

After a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.

Man who led officer and K9 on chase through snow sentenced to 4 years in prison

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Dylan Matthew Pettigrew was recently sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of First Degree Burglary.

Drug trafficking pair nabbed in Carson City sentenced to total of 16 years in prison

Two drug traffickers were sentenced today to a total of 16 years in federal prison after a traffic stop in Carson City for speeding led to the discovery of large quantities of methamphetamine and heroin in their car.

Danny Lyle Jensen II, 39, and Kimberly Lopes, 37, both of Henderson, Nevada, were sentenced to 130 months and 63 months, respectively, and five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Howard D. McKibben. They previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine.

South Lake Tahoe pair off to prison after abusing their two young children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Danielle McGlothin and Lance Logan are heading to state prison after being sentenced for abusing their two young children, ages one and three.

On October 19, 2017, staff at the 3 Peaks Resort in South Lake Tahoe discovered two small children without clothes on, roaming the parking lot unattended. Staff attempted to return the boys to their parents after the kids were almost hit by a car. The parents, McGlothin and Logan, appeared to the staff to be under the influence of drugs and police were called.

SLTPD and DCSO go undercover to investigate Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley drug trafficking

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) Street Enforcement Team have conducted a joint investigation over the last nine months into the trafficking and sales of heroin and methamphetamine in the area.

Man facing drug charges after driving car into building in South Lake Tahoe

A Minden, Nevada man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday after allegedly "nodding" off at the wheel after using heroin and crashing into a building on the corner of 3rd Street and James Avenue.

The 27-year-old man was driving as part of his local job. He is being charged with DUI, Driving While Addicted and Possession of Narcotics, all misdemeanors. He is currently in the El Dorado County Jail with a bail of $22,500.

There was some damage to a utility cover on the building .

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police Departments responded. The driver was not injured.

Law enforcement investigating shots fired; Pioneer Trail shut down

UPDATE 5:15PM: Pioneer Trail is back open after multiple agencies responded to the sounds of gunshots near Temple Bat Yam.

At 11:09 a.m. March 18, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) dispatch received two simultaneous calls for the same general area, one for the shots fired and another for the activation of a burglar alarm. Since they were so close in proximity, police officers responded as they could be related calls according SLTPD Officer Matt Morrison.

Truckee police arrest pair for alleged rental fraud at Lake Tahoe homes

The Truckee Police Department was notified by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office on March 7, 2018 about a possible fraud that may have taken place in both communities.

A vacation home in Incline Village had been rented for a number of days by a couple using a fraudulent credit card issued by a foreign country. When the rental company returned to the home on Friday afternoon, they discovered major damage to the residence as well as the theft of thousands of dollars worth of electronics and other valuables. The homeowners had reported an approximate loss of $75,000 in theft and damages.

Nearly two dozen arrested in City multi-agency drug sweep

Nearly two dozen people were arrested during a monthlong Carson City area drug sweep that involved multiple agencies, the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team announced Friday.

The Carson City SET, with the assistance from multiple agencies to include, the Department of Public Safety Tri Net Narcotics task force, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit and the Reno Police Department Street Enforcement Team conducted the narcotics suppression operation targeting those using and selling narcotics in the Carson City area.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on theft and drug charges

A 38-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested early Saturday for felony suspicion of attempted commercial burglary and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

William Jack Phelps was taken into custody in the 4200 block of South Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, a security guard contacted the sheriff’s office regarding a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Big Lots, 4215 South Carson Street.

Carson City arrest nets 5 pounds of meth and half pound of heroin

Two people face drug trafficking and transportation charges after deputies recovered more than 5 pounds of methamphetamine and around a half pound of heroin during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested were Kimberly Ann Lopes, 36, and Danny Lyle Jensen II, 38, both of Las Vegas. Each face two level 3 charges of trafficking controlled substances, 1 count each of transportation of controlled substances, and 1 count each of possession of controlled substances for sales.

Pair arrested for alleged drug trafficking in Douglas County

South Lake Tahoe and Gardnerville men were arrested in Douglas County on November 19, 2017 on suspicion of drug trafficking and related charges.

Parents of Addicted Loved Ones support group starts in South Lake Tahoe

Education and support is now offered to locals on the South Shore who have a son or daughter, or other loved one, who is suffering from addiction.

Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL), is a support group of parents helping parents that meets at Tahoe Youth & Family Services every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The sessions are free of charge.

PAL can also help spouses who feel they have to parent their addicted partner.

PAL is open to all sober family members and friends who are 18-year-old and older.

Douglas County Sheriff's K-9 fundraiser

The final radio show of the year for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will coincide with a K-9 fundraiser on Friday, October 6 with Jon Sanchez on KOH780AM.

Five of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office K-9s will be on hand during the live show and event from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sanchez Ranch Meats located at 1734 Hwy 395 in Minden, Nev.

The DCSO K-9 unit is made up of Shadow, Drago, Bak, Bane and Beny.

Two new members added to Douglas County K9 unit

There are two new members to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Beny and Bane.

Beny is from Slovakia and is a one-year-old German Shepard. His new partner is canine handler Deputy Adam Windsor, who has been with DCSO for 13 years. Deputy Windsor described Beny as "mellow."

Alert resident leads to arrest of couple in South Lake Tahoe

A couple was arrested on multiple charges Friday after an alert citizen reported a suspicious vehicle at the dead end of Sundown Trail near Lodgepole Trail on the South Shore in El Dorado County.

Christy Marie, 34, and Kase Harley Krumwiede, 32, both transients, were in the parked car when El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy DeLeon arrived to investigate the call. Kase had a felony arrest warrant out of Oregon, and both had methamphetamine and paraphernalia on their persons. A loaded firearm with the serial number removed was located in a bag inside the vehicle.

Several pounds of prescriptions gathered during area Drug Take Back Day

Law enforcement agencies and volunteers around the country participated in Drug Take Back Day on April 29, taking tons of medications off of the streets.

Both Douglas County and the City of South Lake Tahoe took part. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office had their Citizen Patrol volunteers staff five locations both at the lake and in the valley. They didn't measure the drugs in pounds, but in box fulls.

Staff was able to turn in 18 boxes of medications, which was more than last October’s collection.

National Drug Take Back Day in South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County

Thousands of communities across the United States will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration “National Drug Take Back” day scheduled for Saturday, April 29 in South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, and spots in the Carson Valley.

46,000 people a year die from drug overdoses and more than half of those die from prescription opioid overdoses. Four out of five new users of heroin began with abusing prescription opioids.

Law enforcement round up 23 gang members - 11 of them arrested in Reno

A lengthy, multi-agency gang investigation in the Reno and Stockton areas led to the arrest of 23 people, including one correctional officer on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

CVS now sells overdose reversal drug over the counter in Nevada and California

CVS announced today that it will now sell the opioid overdose antidote naloxone without a prescription in all of their Nevada locations. This brings the total to 37 states where the drugstore chains sells naloxone over-the-counter, including California.

El Dorado County Sheriff K9 retiring after 8 years on the force

After eight years of service to El Dorado County, K9 Bakus has retired.

Bakus started his career with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office in 2008 and has since apprehended dangerous criminals and been responsible for taking copious amounts of narcotics off the streets.

At the beginning, the Sheriff K9 was partnered with Deputy Mike Roberts and was trained and certified in patrol operations.

Free lock bags available to keep meds out of the wrong hands

Due to highly addictive prescription drugs kept in the medicine cabinets or nightstands of many households, the South Lake Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (DFC) is giving away lock bags so people can keep their prescriptions safe from unauthorized use.

Oxycontin, Demerol, Valium, Ritalin, Adderall, Xanax, Percocet, and Codeine, are also some of the most prescribed and readily-available drugs. They are so readily available that 1 in every 4 teens in America say they have used or misused a prescription drug.

South Lake Tahoe man accused of cashing fraudulent check and possessing narcotics

A South Lake Tahoe man is in the Douglas County Jail after he and seven others cashed fraudulent payroll checks at area casinos.

Between August 19 and 25, 2016, checks totaling $16,693.98 were falsely written on an account owned by Twenty Two Bistro of Squaw Valley according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).

After it was known that people were cashing the fraudulent checks at local casinos, Lakeside Inn notified DCSO that South Lake Tahoe resident John Liska had attempted to cash one in the amount of $976.15 on August 29 and was taken into custody.

Shared pain pills fueling opioid epidemic

As lawmakers grapple with how best to combat the nation’s prescription painkiller abuse crisis, a recent survey is shedding light on how patients who get these medications — drugs such as OxyContin, methadone or Vicodin — sometimes share or mishandle them.

El Dorado County teen latest victim of counterfeit hydrocodone

An 18-year-old El Dorado Hills resident is the latest victim of a rash of overdoses from pills made to look like the prescription painkiller, Norco.

In Sacramento County, six deaths are attributed to the pills, and the death of county resident George Berry is now the seventh suspected victim. The pills ingested are actually Fentanyl, which is 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.

Senate Bill designed to fight addiction gaining momentum

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) will “make a real difference for families and communities” struggling with drug addiction, U.S. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio said Saturday. He spoke about the bill, which has bipartisan support, in a weekly Republican address.

“This epidemic does not discriminate,” Senator Portman said. “Zip codes don’t matter. It’s affecting our cities, suburban areas, and rural counties. Young or old, rich, middle class or poor, black, white, Hispanic or Asian. The grip of addiction affects all of us.”

Four arrested in Douglas County on drug trafficking charges

Undercover narcotics officers were able to purchase 170 grams of Heroin, 50 grams of Methamphetamine, and one handgun during an investigation into drug and gun runners trying to set up shop in Douglas County.

The investigation, which lasted several months, began when the Douglas County Street Enforcement Tea (DCSET) learned that four drug dealers from Stockton, Calif., were attempting to sell drugs and firearms in the area.

That is the beginning, and the average heroin user will spend years trying to find the same feeling as that first high, ended only by death, or seeking help to rid themselves of the dark beast of addiction. Those are the only two options.

Woman arrested for auto theft in South Lake Tahoe

The arrest of a 21-year-old transient in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday night follows a weekend where four cars were stolen and one was reported as missing.

As reported in South Tahoe Now, the cars were stolen from outside Domino's, Brother's Place, a Ruth Avenue business and a residence on Wiliam Avenue between Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12. In each case, the ignition keys had been left in the vehicle.

SLEDNET investigation lands seven in jail on drug charges

Drug task force agents investigating the alleged sales and use of illegal narcotics in the South Lake Tahoe city limits arrested seven adults and confiscated drugs and paraphernalia.

Agents from the South Lake El Dorado Narcotic Enforcement Task Team (SLEDNET) served a search warrant at a home located in the 800 block of Tallac Road on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.

Inside the home, they found 11 adults, seven of them who claimed to reside at the location.

South Lake Tahoe pair arrested on felony drug trafficking charges

Two from South Lake Tahoe were arrested Thursday on felony drug trafficking and other charges after a traffic stop led to the discovery of methamphetamine and heroin, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Elizabeth Gosh, 30, and Kyle Leake, 48, were taken into custody at 7:04 p.m. and booked into Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, deputies with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team were patrolling in an unmarked car and observed a white two door sedan with California plates run through a solid red strop light at the intersection of Roop and Long streets.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on felony drug charges

An El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) Deputy out on patrol in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 3 witnessed a man jaywalking across Highway 50 near the intersection of Third and Fourth Streets.

Since the man, 57-year-old Michael Harry Horny, appeared to be under the influence, the deputy followed him into Burrito Brothers where Horny headed to the restroom and stayed for a long period of time. Concerned Horny perhaps had passed out, or was ill, the deputy knocked on the door. Horny and local law enforcement have had a lot of contact over the past several years and he was known to the deputy.
