Opinion: Alone We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much

As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."
As a community that is in the midst of change, we can be reminded of these quotes as we move forward and live in a town we're both proud of, and a vibrant part of.

Since that time they have been serving up their craft brewed compositions coast to coast throughout the USA and into Canada, released their first studio album “You, Me, and the Rest of the World”, and have done so as a fully independent entity. Now 18 Months into their ongoing tour, the duo makes a South Lake Tahoe stop on January 25th at the Himmel Haus.

Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Holding a Job Fair
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/07/2013 - 12:27pmJob seekers are invited to have an experience of a lifetime this winter in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort hire a combined total of 2,300 seasonal employees for the 2013-2014 winter season. Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400. Three job fairs are scheduled throughout October, giving candidates an opportunity to meet with managers and find the best-suited jobs.

South Lake Tahoe jail inmates enrolled in culinary program win at county fair
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 07/05/2013 - 4:24pmIn 2007 the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department formed a partnership with the Lake Tahoe Community College to expand the College’s existing culinary arts program to the Sheriff’s Tahoe jail.
Every year the inmates test their quality by entering the El Dorado County Fair in the Baking and Fiery Fair categories. Since 2007 the inmates have amassed over 70 first, second, and third place ribbons. This year was no exception. The inmates in the culinary arts program earned a total of 31 ribbons: 12 First Place, 11 Second Place, and 6 Third Place ribbons.

Lake Tahoe closed sales
115 homes are currently in escrow on the California side of Lake Tahoe and 37 homes are in this status on the Nevada side. The Lake Tahoe California figures are 10% higher than last year at this time and the Lake Tahoe Nevada figures are up 60%!
Marijuana trafficker with El Dorado County grow operations sentenced to more than 17 years in prison
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 04/15/2013 - 3:11pmA Fresno man was sentenced Monday to prison on marijuana trafficking and conspiracy charges, in which he had grow operations in El Dorado, Placer and Tehama counties and then he and partners distributed the marijuana throughout the country.
Uriel Ochoa-Espindola, 44, received a sentence of 17.5 years, according to U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner.

Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update approved

Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.
Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.

Called the U-6 rate, it declined in Nevada from 22.3 percent in the four quarters through March 31 to 22.1 percent in the 12 months ending June 30, according to the quarterly report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

California layoffs at a four-year low

"In terms of the last couple of years it's actually down which is a good sign," said Todd Johnson, an economist with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which released the data. California posted the lowest number of mass layoff actions since 2007. Those actions resulted in 377,413 people losing their jobs.
