Registration deadline approaching for South Lake Tahoe AYSO

The calendar may still say May, but the fall soccer season in South Lake Tahoe isn't that far away! Registration is now open for South Lake Tahoe AYSO Region 282, which is open to all players ages 4-16.
The deadline for registration is June 1 with the price of $95 per player and a final late registration deadline of June 8 which will include a $20 late fee. No registrations will be accepted after June 8.
The season includes 8-12 games for 6U division and up, end of the season tournaments and awards, and a brand new uniform (jersey, shorts, and socks) that all players get to keep.

May 1, 2017 (All day) Registration is open for all youth ages 4 to 18 for the AYSO regular soccer season. It is first come, first served from May 1- May 31. To register, log onto their website at http://www.sltayso.org/. The season starts with practices in August and wraps up in the middle of October.
All players play at least half of every game. The cost per player for the entire season is $87.50 and includes
• All League play (8-12 games for U6 division and up)
• End of the season Tournament and Trophies/Awards
New reservation system for South Lake Tahoe's Campground by the Lake

Many who have camped in South Lake Tahoe at the City owned Campground by the Lake have said they love the campground, but hate the reservation system.
That experience is about to change and duties of reservations, and cancellations, will soon be handled by Reserve America. This nationwide company handles reservations for 289 federal properties, 42 state, 23 county and 23 private campgrounds according to their website.

Lake Tahoe 'discovered' by John C. Fremont on Valentine's Day, 1844

It was 174 years ago, on Valentine's Day in 1844, when John C. Frémont and Charles Preuss “discovered” Lake Tahoe as they were making the first crossing across the Sierra Nevada in winter. The pair had been hired by Congress to explore the Colombia River region to the Pacific Ocean with famous scouts Kit Carson and Thomas Fitzpatrick.
What is a Chautauqua?

This is the second year the Lake Tahoe Historical Society has put on a Chautauqua, yet many people are unsure of what one is.
Chautauqua was a very popular adult education movement in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Named after Chautauqua Lake where the first was held, Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s.
Former US President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."

A busy Labor Day weekend starts Friday, with a plethora of activities for locals and visitors alike. There are fireworks, music, car shows, runs, boat races, a farm-fork festival and much more to enjoy.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is bringing historical characters back to life in their "Chautauqua at Lake Tahoe 2015" on September 20 at 5 p.m. in the Valhalla Grand Hall.
Experience Mrs. Tevis, John Muir, Yank Clement, Julia Bulette, Charley Parkhurst and Kit Carson as you've never imagined.
Last year's sold out event in the Boathouse Theater was so successful the Historical Society decided to move into a larger venue and add dinner to the evening.
Genoa Cowboy Festival and Sippin' Sunday This Weekend

In 1851, Genoa became the first settlement in the Nevada Territory and was full of cowboys and settlers. cowboys and ranchers have shared work, words and music here. The first "thirst parlor," the Genoa Bar, came along two years later to serve drinks to those traveling the California Trail as well as others finding themselves in the West.
Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day

The second Free Fishing Day in 2013 in California will be Saturday, Sept. 7. The first was way back on Saturday, July 6.
On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.
Mural Project spotlights talents of local artist and seeks to engage community

The white walls on the second floor, outside the banquet rooms of the Carson Nugget, are in the process of being transformed. Right now they contain the mural paintings of Kit Carson, V&T Railroad, Dat So La Lee, the Carson Mint, Carson Nugget, Roosevelt’s Speech Capital Building, Carson Brewery and Capital Building; but soon those walls could contain so much more.
“The hope is to show Carson City’s uniqueness as well as the love and pride we have for our home and community,” said Gardnerville artist Beverly Caputo.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

It’s that time of the year again. This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like the summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months, especially August.
To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.
Fire restrictions begin Monday outside the Lake Tahoe basin

The combination of a particularly dry winter and spring, parched vegetation, lingering drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures, and recent human-caused fires forced the Forest Service to implement the conditions.

The second of California’s two free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3. The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You'll be able to fish wherever you like in California. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
