Quarantine in South Lake Tahoe leads to poem brought to life in new children's book

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In search of something positive to do while staying at home during the pandemic, South Lake Tahoe parent Gantt Miller and his daughter Mackenzie started brainstorming. They couldn't sew, so making masks were out of the question. What could they do?

They could tell a story.

The nine-year-old Mackenzie and her dad, who wrote the book under a pen name, M.C. Behm, started to explore what messages they could convey between the front and back covers.

Why Research is so Important in Writing Mystery Novels at SLT LIbrary

Local author, JoAnn Conner, will discuss the importance of doing research when writing a mystery novel, and how this pertains to her own work. 'Heartwood' is historical fiction with a mystery woven in the story, while 'The Mountain' is a murder mystery revolving around the theft of Native American artifacts. The most challenging for Conner was launching her first series, featuring veteran Detective Frank Riley. 'Death Song' is a murder mystery that involved research on different forms of poisons, and how they are used. Book sale and signing to follow.

Murder mystery “What’s the Beef with Wellington?” in South Lake Tahoe

At his 1929 lakeshore mansion, wealthy entrepreneur, Anthony Wellington, suddenly is found dead in his chair in his study. A detective suspects foul play. Could the culprit (or culprits) be a resentful daughter, a mysterious gardener, or even a Washington Senator baseball player?

Find out on Friday, November 16, as Unity at the Lake presents, “What’s the Beef with Wellington?” an interactive 1920’s style radio-staged mystery play, where the audience can ask penetrating questions of the six suspects.

The cast includes some of your favorite Tahoe actors.

Author Mark Bacon Talks Murder at the SLT Library

Jennifer Quashnick is the local author of the Mountaingirl Mysteries series, in which Rachel Winters, a Lake Tahoe resident frequently accompanied by her dog Bella, finds herself embroiled in murder, mystery, and romance in the Tahoe Basin and beyond. The series begins with the Sierra Nevada Trail of Murder, where Rachel and Bella discover a murder victim along a local hiking trail. The series continues with Sierra Nevada River of Lies and Sierra Nevada Dangerous Developments.

Mountaingirl Mystery Author at the Zephyr Cove Library

Special Mother's Day train to Virginia City

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will once again offer special train rides over the Mother's Day weekend, May 13-14, that will take moms and families from Carson City to Virginia City aboard a historic train.

All mothers will be honored with a long-stem rose as they board the 1953 ALCO (American Locomotive Company) heritage diesel locomotive for the 16 mile trip to the Comstock-era town of Virginia City.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is holding their 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Convention Center from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17.

It started with a wine and cheese party on the second floor of Dart Liquor and it has morphed over the years into one of the top annual fundraisers on the South Shore.

600 people are expected at the evening full of food, fun, dancing and drinking, all in the name of community to raise funds for the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club's scholarships and grant programs.

A play you'll be dying to go to at Lake Tahoe Community College

Bodies will be dropping like flies as mystery, chaos, and laughter prevail during The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, a Hollywood murder mystery being performed by by the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The play, written by John Bishop and directed by Susan Boulanger, will be at the school's Duke Theater March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

Valhalla's Art, Music & Theater Festival starts June 17

Whodunnit on the V & T?

Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

In Death by Golf, an escaped convict, an anxious bride, a scheming new husband, and a suspicious attorney all convene at Grandpa's house.
