Ten Lake Tahoe Area Athletes Part of Olympic Contingent Headed to Sochi

The USA has a record 94 athletes headed to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Olympic games next week.

Here is a list of the teams (Lake Tahoe, Reno and Truckee athletes in bold):

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!

There are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.

Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Olympic Heritage Week Begins in Lake Tahoe

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

Lake Tahoe Community College Nordic Center to open March 1

The new Lake Tahoe Community College Nordic Center is scheduled to open Friday, March 1. Season passes will go on sale Friday.
“We believe an additional two weeks of winter will potentially improve course conditions offering the best experience for participants,” said Megan Waskiewicz, LTCC Community Education program director, in a news release.
Nordic Center passes are available online at www.ltcc.edu/communityeducation, in person at the LTCC campus CONNECT Community Education office (B107A) on, Mon-Fri 10-2p.m., or over the phone at 530-541-4660 ext. 717.

Agency, search and rescue host kids Winter Wilderness Survival program

For the past 17 years, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue have collaborated together to teach the 4th graders at Incline Elementary School about Winter Wilderness Survival, better known as the “Hug-A-Tree” program. The program focuses on teaching children what to do should they ever find themselves lost in the wilderness. This year the program will be held at the Incline Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Lake Tahoe Nordic Festival arrives Feb. 8-10

Alpenglow Sports has teamed up with Tahoe Cross Country to present the first-ever Lake Tahoe Nordic Festival Friday, February 8 through Sunday, February 10. South Shore residents should get their cross-country gear out of the closet — there's a new ski center in town.
The Lake Tahoe Community College Nordic Club plans to open groomed Nordic trails on campus by early February. A $29 individual season pass will offer unlimited use of about 7 kilometers of terrain for both skate and classic skiers.

Missing snowboarder found alive, stayed overnight at Horizon

A search for missing snowboarder Corey Hoffman ended this morning when the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was contacted by a family member who informed them that Hoffman had phoned his father and advised he had spent the night at Horizon Casino Resort.

Deputies contacted Corey at the Stagecoach Lodge where he had proceeded to, and according to him he was unaware of the search for him. After a lengthy interview with Corey and his brother who had reported him missing, we are unable to determine exactly what transpired.

Search operation continues for Nathan Sperring in Desolation Wilderness area

The search for Desolation Wilderness camper Nathan Sperring, 29, is ongoing. Current information indicates that Sperring entered the Desolation Wilderness by himself. He is well prepared and is reported to be an experienced cold weather camper with guide experience in Alaska. Before he left on his camping trip Nathan advised his girlfriend and parents where he was going and when he would be back. He specifically advised that if he was not back by Tuesday, Oct. 23, something was wrong. He was to return to Tahoe City.

Forest Service welcomes more California jobs under new ski legislation

California is expected to see a boost in its local mountain economies as a result of a new legislation that now permits year-long recreation opportunities on U.S. Forest Service ski areas. The Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011, which was signed by President Barack Obama on Nov. 7, is estimated to create and annually sustain up to 600 extra jobs nationwide.
