Mechanical whole tree removal will take place off Forest Road 16N52 over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
Reno police officer shoots man driving van towards pedestian filled street
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/03/2016 - 5:27pmA driver of a minivan that was headed to a closed Reno Street full of pedestrians on Saturday was shot and killed by a police officer on foot.
The incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3 when a Reno Police Department Motor Unit attempted to make a traffic stop on a silver minivan in the area on Kuenzli Street and E. 2nd Street. The minivan failed to yield, proceeding west toward downtown Reno.

Forest thinning project resumes near Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/03/2016 - 4:14pmThe South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration project on 10,000 acres near Fallen Leaf Lake has resumed.
Crews with the U.S. Forest Service will be mechanically removing whole trees off Fallen Leaf Road near the campground over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire and create healthier forests.

California’s weather allows bicyclists to enjoy riding many months throughout the year. TTD provides plan for Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe

This plan that will answer some community member's concerns about the project by addressing right-of-way, housing, road construction, assistance and support for affected businesses, and continued community involvement.

Due to the heavy equipment needed, the Forest Service will issue a forest order closing the project area (units 1 and 148) to pedestrians from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

Lake Tahoe bike path carries high construction cost
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/20/2016 - 8:27pmVisitors to Lake Tahoe’s east shore could soon have a new bike path linking upscale Incline Village to Nevada’s Sand Harbor State Park, but the price tag might induce sticker shock: $12.5 million for the 3-mile project.
Yes, that is more than $4 million a mile in taxpayer dollars for a 10-foot-wide bike path traveling just about 16,000 feet along the picturesque mountain lake.
Not to mention another $7 million to $9 million that the Nevada Transportation Department plans to spend in state gas taxes in conjunction with the project on related environmental and safety needs.
St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/10/2016 - 7:08pmWith St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.
The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

Nevada fatalities on the road rose in 2015

Preliminary data shows that there were 321 Nevada traffic deaths in 2015, an increase by 30 deaths over the previous year.
When compared with the number of miles driven in Nevada, though, traffic deaths have dropped from an average of 1.54 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in 2008 to 1.13 fatalities per 100 million miles in 2013. Statewide, traffic fatalities reached an all-time high of 432 in 2006.

Youngsters may look forward to a night of trick-or-treating, but many adults choose to partake in the festivities, too – oftentimes with alcohol included. While Halloween may be a spooky night, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) want to help ensure that it is also a safe one. If you plan on making alcohol a part of your celebrations this year, designating a sober driver or finding a safe ride home should be a top priority.
Money secured for Hwy 89 improvement projects at Meeks Bay and Tahoe City

1,800 cyclists to bike around the lake in Sunday's Tour de Tahoe

More than 1,800 riders are expected to take on the 4,000 feet of climbing involved in the ride which continues to gain in popularity. Project in Incline Village to keep pedestrians safe

The first $300,000 will be spent on a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project that began Tuesday that is relocating a crosswalk and adding safety signs on Highway 28 in the Incline Village.

4th of July sobriety check point on South Shore

There is a large increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the area's roads due to the fireworks display and holiday parties. The increase in law enforcement presence at Lake Tahoe will help deter motorists and pedestrians from entering the roadways while impaired.

Driver inattention at crosswalks and intersections focus of increased enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/07/2015 - 5:38pmDouglas County Sheriff's Deputies will be focusing on traffic enforcement at intersections and crosswalks, looking for red light and stop sign violations, pedestrian violations, speeders and distracted drivers throughout the county from June 8 through June 21.
Key factors in many of the recent fatal highway traffic accidents have been driver inattention and failure to yield to pedestrians. Deputies will continue to enforce all traffic violations on all roadways throughout the county but these violations in particular will be targeted and enforced. Citations will be issued to violators.
Fanny Bridge project earns TRPA approval
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/30/2015 - 9:24pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved the Tahoe Transportation District’s State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project to realign State Route 89 through Tahoe City.
The project realigns State Route 89 to route through traffic over roundabouts and a new two-lane bridge across the Truckee River to reduce transportation conflicts among drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians at the congested pinch point at the Tahoe City “Wye.”
City Council approves motion to apply for $2.1 million transportation grant

Those were South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman JoAnn Conner's words after hearing how several agencies will work together to make the Middle School Connectivity Plan a reality.
Her sentiments were echoed by her fellow council members and the mayor after seeing how multiple agencies can leverage their funds and plan together for a network of connecting trails through South Lake Tahoe that will keep pedestrians and bikers off unsafe roadways.
Major highway project coming in 2017 to South Lake Tahoe

This three year project will have major impacts on businesses and travel from the "Y" to Trout Creek Bridge starting in 2017 so Caltrans officials at the presentation expected more involvement from the community.
Community helps shape future of walking, biking and safety in Lake Tahoe

Those attending were asked to look at the plans displayed on boards lining the room, and give their comments on a variety of issues from safety to connectivity.
People were actively participating, telling the project planners, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPA) and TRPA, what they felt was most important on infrastructure and goals.

The public has two upcoming opportunities to plan the future of Lake Tahoe bike and pedestrian paths, the first of which will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at the South Lake Tahoe Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Lake Tahoe Region Bike and Pedestrian Plan (BPP) was last updated in 2010, and because of this, the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) is conducting an online survey as well as holding a meeting on both the North and South shores of Lake Tahoe.

Highway 89 construction this summer worries business owners
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/01/2015 - 9:07pmWhile the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.
During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.

Lunches are held monthly at Lake Tahoe Community College. They cover topics ranging from transportation to the economy and the environment, and offer a comfortable, low-key setting for people to discuss and learn about those issues. The events are free to the public.
Agencies Seek Public Input on Lake Tahoe Pedestrian Network

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to vehicle traffic; pedestrians welcome

The California Tahoe Conservancy said today that the park will be closed from October 31 to May 1.
Paid parking is available nearby at the Parking Garage at Heavenly Village. The park provides opportunities for short day use outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow, however sledding is not allowed.
Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 9:27pmHave you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.
There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.
According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."
South Lake Tahoe Police Step Up Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/21/2014 - 10:09pmThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department will conduct targeted pedestrian and bicycle safety law enforcement this summer in order to reduce accidents. They will be deploying officers on bicycles and motorcycles to educate the public.
In 2013, the South Lake Tahoe Police department conducted 42 injury traffic collision investigations that involved serious and/or fatal injuries. 10 of those collisions involved bicycles and 5 involved pedestrians.

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.
The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
Sand Harbor Shuttle Service in Place for Summer

In it's third year, the Tahoe Transportation District’s East Shore Express, the shuttle bus provides rides Incline Village to Sand Harbor. They are able to do so with a federal grant and funds gathered from the selling of Lake Tahoe License Plates.
Waterline Project in the State Streets Area of South Lake Tahoe; Tahoe Keys Traffic Impacts

This project will improve water quality, quantity, pressures and, most importantly, will enhance firefighting capability in the State Streets neighborhood. The project will consist of installation of a 12” main on Tahoe Keys Blvd. and 6” mains on Idaho Ave., Wyoming Ave., Montana Ave., Utah Ave., Colorado Ave., Arizona Ave., Texas Ave., and Jeffery St. In addition to the water mains, fire hydrants will be installed at approximately 500 foot intervals to provide better fire protection.
Over $550,000 Awarded by TRPA to Lake Tahoe Organizations

El Dorado County Law Enforcement: Halloween Crackdown on Drunk Drivers

The Avoid the 6 DUI Task Force has given a fair warning to all partygoers: keep the party off the road.
“The scariest part of Halloween is not the spooky costumes and scary pranks, it’s the impaired drivers. All too often, partygoers don’t plan ahead and choose to drive impaired, but a costume can’t disguise drunk driving,” said Press Information Officer Dave Stevenson.
Pedestrians Hit by Car While Crossing Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/04/2013 - 7:51amTwo pedestrians were struck by a car last night on Highway 89 in the vicinity of Brother's Bar & Grill resulting in life threatening injuries. The injured are a husband and wife visiting from Germany but names and ages are unknown at this time. Apparently they were attempting to cross the road when hit. The driver that hit them was not intoxicated and stopped to render aid immediately. The male pedestrian was transferred to Renown Medical Center in Reno by Cal Star. There is no report on his condition at this time except that he had major injuries.
Bicyclist runs red light, crashes into skateboarder
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 07/19/2013 - 12:05amOn Wednesday, July 17 at around 8:30 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to the intersection of US Highway 50 with Heavenly Village Way to investigate an injury traffic collision.
Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bicycle southbound on US Highway 50 in the center left turn lane. He was approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way. Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his skateboard, and in the company of other pedestrians, while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk.
Highway 50 improvements underway in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 05/08/2013 - 11:35pmA $7.3 million road improvement project has begun on a half-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans announced.
The project spans from Ski Run Boulevard to Wildwood Avenue and will allow for the collection and treatment of stormwater runoff, in addition to adding Class II bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks and pedestrian lighting. Other features include a new intersection signal, landscaping and streetscaping. Shoulders will be widened to six feet.
