UC Davis scientists trace particulate air pollution to its source

Previous research has shown that air pollution containing fine and ultrafine particles is associated with asthma, heart disease and premature death. This new study, released today by the California Air Resources Board and the Electric Power Research Institute, marks the first time that researchers have conducted source-oriented sampling of these particles in the atmosphere.

“Hundreds of residents have contacted the county to voice their frustration about the fire tax,” said Supervisor John Knight. “The Board of Supervisors can’t sit idly by while the state is running a legalized extortion scheme on rural residents.”
El Dorado County accepting applications for Federal Coordination Committee

Various provisions of federal law mandate that federal agencies coordinate certain activities with local agencies before making decisions which may impact local government, according to a news release sent by Mike Applegarth, principal analyst for the county's chief administrative office.
It is important that county government track and analyze federal decisions in order to timely invoke the right of coordination and participate in the decision-making process.

New earthquake technology reveals Lake Tahoe faults could generate large events
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 2:08pmCARNELIAN BAY — Results of a new U.S. Geological Survey study found that faults west of Lake Tahoe, Calif., referred to as the Tahoe-Sierra frontal fault zone, pose a substantial increase in the seismic hazard assessment for the Lake Tahoe region of California and Nevada, and could potentially generate earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.3 to 6.9. A close association of landslide deposits and active faults also suggests that there is an earthquake-induced landslide hazard along the steep fault-formed range front west of Lake Tahoe.

The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.
