Forest Service responds to rekindling of prescribed fire unit on Kingsbury Grade

UDPATE12:45PM: A prescribed fire on Upper Kingsbury Grade conducted two weeks ago rekindled, touching off about 14 acres before it was fully contained late this morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
"The fire is 100 percent contained," said spokeswoman Cheva Heck.

Burn pile catches fire on Upper Kingsbury

Fire crews have responded this morning to upper Kingsbury Grade where a small fire broke out near the Tahoe Rim Trail across from Andrea Court.
The fire apparently started from a smoldering burn pile. It spread to about 10 feet by 10 feet in size and was reported at around 11:35. Multiple fire units from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District responded and have knocked it down.

Small brush fire snuffed at Upper Kingsbury

Firefighters responded this morning to a quarter-acre brush fire that emitted a lot of smoke near the top of Kingsbury Grade. No structures were threatened. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for a project that would implement extensive forest thinning along Lake Tahoe's South Shore to reduce the risk of high-intensity wildfire and improve forest health. Under the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA), the release of the FEIS triggers the 30-day objection period for the project. Only those who have previously submitted written comments on this project may file an objection.

El Dorado Forest Service officials report the lightning-caused Long Fire, which has burned about 275 acres in timber and brush, is about 85 percent contained and poses no risk to life or property. The U. S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other local agencies are continuing investigation and clean-up of a small spill of an unknown substance into Taylor Creek near the Forest Service Visitor Center on Hwy. 89. The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board obtained water samples from the area this morning. Results may be available by tomorrow and will help determine whether additional clean-up is necessary.

Fire on Old Clear Creek Road contained; Highway 50 open

Update 2 p.m.: Fire crews have contained a fire that broke out this morning near Old Clear Creek Road near the top of Spooner Summit, and Highway 50 has reopened.
The fire was last reported to be about 1.5 acres in size, and there was one home in the area that was threatened. Light winds and cool temperatures helped firefighters get a handle on the blaze, with a helicopter dumping water to help out the hand crews on the ground.
