The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced the winners of the Lake Spirit Awards honoring "real people making real progress protecting Lake Tahoe" at their first-ever Community Appreciation Day event held on September 29 at TRPA's office.

National Forests in California provide benefit to local economies

Outdoor recreation activities in California’s national forests contributed $2 billion dollars to local economies and helped sustain an estimated 38,000 jobs in 2010.

The U.S. Forest Service’s National Visitor Use Monitoring report released Aug. 19 shows that national forests attracted 170.8 million recreational visitors nationwide and sustained approximately 223,000 jobs in rural communities across the country.

Art hikes at Spooner Lake Sept. 17 and 18

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Plan to participate in the region’s only art hike. Experience live performances and installation art along a gentle 2.5 mile guided trail around Spooner Lake. This is a one of a kind blending of art and nature with thirty fellow hikers during Trails and Vistas 2011 art hike along the Spooner Loop Trail.

Experience a unique blend of art and the natural world during the eighth annual Trails and Vistas art hike on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18. The hike, modeled on the theme of “Reflections and Rhythms,” takes place at Spooner Lake in Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park (Glenbrook, NV ) – just fifteen from Incline Village and less than a one-hour drive from Reno, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

Tahoe Fund partners with Heavenly, Northstar

The nonprofit Tahoe Fund partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, called the "Ski Conservation Fund", will raise an estimated $75,000 annually for the nonprofit Fund to support environmental improvement projects within the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Wine festival at Squaw Valley

Wine lovers can enjoy early fall in the Sierra at the 23rd Annual Alpen Wine Festival held on Sunday, Sept. 4 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Village at Squaw Valley. All proceeds from the festival benefit Can Do Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a national nonprofit organization sponsoring lifestyle empowerment programs for people with MS and their support partners.
