CHP advises motorists to not travel to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The stories of 10-15 hours to get to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area on Friday were not isolated, and many of the repeat reports are occurring on Saturday.

Epic ski conditions have beckoned visitors to the mountains over the three-day holiday weekend, but what created those ski conditions has also caused local roads that aren't passable and clogged highways with frequent closures.

Standstill on South Lake Tahoe area highway and streets; Groups looking into solution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's almost a perfect storm for traffic in Lake Tahoe: extra visitors in town for the holiday weekend and epic ski conditions with snow and chain requirements over US50 and Echo Summit.

On Monday, locals and visitors alike were part of that storm, leaving motorists stranded along US 50, Lake Tahoe Blvd., and all surface streets in Meyers that have a link to the highway over Echo Summit.

National focus on South Lake Tahoe's snowpack during Operation Sierra Storm

The annual television meteorologist's conference, Operation Sierra Storm (OSS), couldn't have happened at a better time to bring the national spotlight to early January's storms fondly nicknamed Snowmageddon and Januburied.

Jim Cantore and Paul Goodloe, leading correspondents at The Weather Channel, both broadcast live from Heavenly Mountain Resort and showcased South Lake Tahoe’s powder-filled ski conditions for two days, eight hours each day during the historic snowfall January 10-13, 2017.

Heavenly Holiday activities wrap up with fireworks and gondola ball drop

Heavenly Holidays wraps up 2016 with a lot of activities, all at either top or the bottom of the Heavenly Gondola in South Lake Tahoe.

Besides the fresh snow and great ski conditions, there are sleigh rides, free outdoor concerts, and the unique gondola ball drop on New Year's Eve with fireworks.

Recent storms leave behind fresh powder at Lake Tahoe ski resorts

Though not as strong as many predicted at lake level, the storms that came through Lake Tahoe this week left behind plenty of powder on the slopes.

The National Weather Service in Reno said little additional snow is expected through Friday but another series of weak to moderate storm systems is likely to bring more snow to the Sierra from Saturday through the middle of next week.

Here is their forecast:

LTN tidbit 12: One-stop reading for daily ski conditions

Tahoe ski conditions ideal in time for 10-day Winter SnowFest

It just doesn’t get any better. March came in like a lion, with a series of storms leaving 4 feet of new snow at North Lake Tahoe ski resorts’ upper elevations. The National Weather Service is predicting that the weather will change Friday with sunny, clear skies for the weekend.
