Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards 19 scholarships
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/24/2020 - 11:18pmSoroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.
Treating the whole person goal at new Robert Maloff Center

Inside its wood, glass and stone walls is the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, bringing together services needed by those recovering from injuries and surgery into one building.
New Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High already big success
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/06/2017 - 11:16pmThe South Lake Tahoe community came together early in 2016 to raise money for a new Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High, and the investment is already paying huge dividends.
"This room is changing the culture of our school," said STHS Football Coach Louis Franklin. "Having a room like this allows each kid to reach their genetic potential."
Student athletes are getting stronger, injuries are down and they are able to maximize their potential on the court, the field, the pool, or whatever the venue is for their sport. Cheerleaders and dancers also utilize the facility.
South Tahoe High skiers among tops in state; Whittell's Norton takes 2nd
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/09/2017 - 11:48pmJust as it had during most of the 2017 high school ski season, the Tahoe Basin State Championships held in South Lake Tahoe happened in the midst of a major snow storm.
Both days of events were switched to Sierra-at-Tahoe who kept the lifts running long enough for the student athletes to finish the slalom (SL) and grand slalom (GS) races.
South Tahoe High's girls team came in first in the slalom and third in the grand slalom, and the boys team took third in both races.

Barton providing free sports physicals to all student athletes
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/14/2016 - 11:24pmBarton Health is offering pre-participation physicals for students who were not able to attend the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics sports physicals event on May 25. All high school, middle school, and Pop Warner athletes from the Tahoe area can participate.
The free physicals are available at Barton Urgent Care and Family Practice the following days and times:
· Wednesday, June 29 from 9am to 12pm
· Wednesday, July 20 from 9am to 12pm
· Wednesday, August 10 from 9am to 12pm

South Tahoe High plans to add Strength and Conditioning Center
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/08/2016 - 9:48pmSouth Tahoe High may soon have a new Strength and Condition Center, and the public can make donations to have their name put on the project.
The Sports Medicine program at the school was developed to help train students to assist injured students, and the new plan at the school is being designed to prevent injuries to the student athlete.
Lake Tahoe Community College celebrates soccer programs' successes
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/09/2015 - 11:21pmWhen Nick Arbelaez moved to South Lake Tahoe with his fiancee Stephanie Shamo, he was taking the Assistant Soccer Coach position at LTCC and she was headed to Barton Health.
After Head Coach Ben Wade and LTCC parted ways mid-season, Arbelaez stepped in as interim head coach, leading the Coyotes to the final four for California Community Colleges.
At Tuesday's board meeting, Arbelaez was introduced to the trustees along with
other coaches and volunteers that have helped both the men's and women's soccer teams have early successes in the young programs.

Barton Health, Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District are offering free sports physicals for student athletes.
South Shore students can receive medical and orthopedic screenings from Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics on Monday, June 1 at the South Tahoe High School Blue Gym.
The sports physicals start at 5:30 p.m. with the schedule as follows:
5:30 p.m.: South Tahoe High & Middle School athletes
6:00 p.m.: Pop Warner athletes
6:30 p.m.: Whittell High & Middle School athletes
Man pleads guilty to videotaping Reno Teens; Previous Douglas County conviction
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/08/2015 - 9:58pmReno resident Rodney Skan, age 60, plead guilty on April 8 in Washoe County to a charge of stalking after he admitted to videotaping four Reno high school girls during the fall of 2013. Police found 175 hours of footage in his motel room of the girls, ages 14, 15 and two 17-year-olds taken at local high school girls sporting events. Skan fixated on particular girls, following them to multiple games throughout the season.

Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine implements computerized concussion testing in area high schools

Orthopedic physicians and the athletic training staff from Tahoe Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are working to combat the impact of concussions affecting young athletes in the region through a computerized test called ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment Testing).
