Scoot over: Zimride announces public route to Lake Tahoe

Zimride, the largest online ride-sharing service in North America, today announced that a new route between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe will open to the public beginning Thanksgiving day, bringing Bay Area residents convenient, inexpensive access to one of the country’s top winter destinations. To celebrate the route’s launch, Zimride is giving away $20,000 worth of free gas to riders on the route.

Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows merger complete

The previously announced transaction between KSL Capital Partners and JMA Ventures which joins Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows under one operating company has officially closed. This announcement affirms that skiers and riders can access Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows’ 6,000 acres, 44 lifts and over 270 trails on one lift ticket or season pass. The two resorts will be connected by convenient, complimentary shuttles that will provide transportation between the two resorts.

“Since announcing the merger, the Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley joint pass products –the Tahoe Super Pass and Tahoe Super Six, and Squaw Valley’s $50 million Renaissance, the response from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s president and CEO.“The opportunity to experience these two incredible mountains, each with their own unique spirit and character, through one pass and one ticket has resonated deeply with our guests,” said Wirth. More than five years after the parents of a slain South Lake Tahoe teenager asked local authorities for help in solving the 1980 murder of their son, the case remains active and some remain hopeful the case could be solved.
Information that surfaced two years ago about the murder of Richard Swanson turned the cold case into an active one, with retired FBI agent Jeff Rinek and South Lake Tahoe police investigator Chuck Owens continuing their search for the killers.

Hellman family donates $100K to keep mansion functional

The family that built a century-old Lake Tahoe mansion now owned by the state has donated $100,000 for its upkeep. The state Department of Parks and Recreation has accepted the donation from the Hellman family of San Francisco to support restoration efforts at the Hellman-Ehrman estate in Lake Tahoe. The mansion is along the west shores of Lake Tahoe in the Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Autopsy provides no new details in local woman's death; investigation continues

Investigators have no new leads in the case of a South Lake Tahoe woman whose remains were found in southern Washington state in early October. The cause of death remains undetermined after an autopsy was performed.
In July, 54-year-old Marie Hanson traveled with a neighbor to the Rainbow Gathering, a countercultural event emphasizing peace and love. She was last seen on July 7, then disappeared, leaving all her personal effects behind.

Consumers may get relief under new Nevada insurance law

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Consumers who have suffered an “extraordinary life event” may now ask their insurance company to provide an exception to the use of their credit information for underwriting and rating purposes, which may otherwise result in an increase in their premium rate.

“This is an important chance for some Nevadans who have suffered an unfortunate event to find relief during these trying economic times,” said Commissioner Scott J. Kipper of the Nevada Division of Insurance.

Regulation Allowing Firearms In State Parks Wins Lawmaker Approval

CARSON CITY – A regulation eliminating a prohibition on carrying firearms in state parks has been approved by the Legislative Commission. The regulation still prohibits the discharge of a firearm in a state park with some limited exceptions, such as designated target shooting areas.

Several South Shore Lake Tahoe businesses, including the Bona Fide Books publishing house, are in the process of evaluating whether to open a temporary "pop-up" bookstore in South Lake Tahoe for the coming holiday shopping season. To help evaluate the feasibility and nature of a pop-up bookstore in the community, and whether there is support for having a permanent bookstore in town, Bona Fide Books has helped develop a quick and simple online survey.

Settlement reached in Tahoe pier dispute

UPDATED 5:19PM: Environmental regulators and a Lake Tahoe property owner who has hosted events for the League to Save Lake Tahoe have settled a dispute over environmental rule violations that stretch back to 2008.
Tamara Fritz and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency agreed to terms this week resolving violations between April 2008 and March 2011. Go here for more.

Tahoe RCD gains funding to continue invasive species protection

The Truckee River Fund has awarded $267,267 to the Tahoe Resource Conservation District to protect Truckee area waterbodies from the growing threat posed by aquatic invasive species. The money will also be used for continued implementation of a mandatory watercraft inspection program and the establishment of a stakeholder collaborative to fund a long-term, sustainable aquatic invasive species prevention program for the Truckee area.
