Tahoe Mountain News publisher Taylor Flynn describes painful search for missing mother Deanna Brooks
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 09/14/2012 - 4:24amEditor's Note: The story below is about my friend and colleague Taylor Flynn's search for his missing mother Deanna Brooks. Taylor wrote about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the long and painful searches for her in the September issue of the Tahoe Mountain News. Go here for his column. The Flynn family wishes to express their gratitude to the South Lake Tahoe community for the outpouring of prayers, thoughts and support. A Facebook page has been established as part of the search, www.facebook.com/find.deanna
On a personal level, it has been painful to see my friend Taylor going through this very difficult time with his family. It serves as a reminder about the importance for family members and friends to check in with one another often as they travel and to provide travel plans including departure and expected arrival times as well as the highways and roadways to be taken. A brief phone call or text message while filling up the gas tank or stopping for a break is always a safe practice when driving long distances. The same can be applied to those going on backcountry trips where an itinerary to family and friends — including departure and expected arrival — should be considered mandatory for hikers and campers. — Jeff Munson
SANTA CRUZ - After three weeks of searches on the sides of Highway 101 and surrounding roads in five counties, Taylor Flynn has not given up hope of finding his mother.
Flynn, the 49-year-old publisher of the Tahoe Mountain News in South Lake Tahoe, was one of the last people to see 70-year-old Deanna Brooks before her disappearance Aug. 24.

News agencies report 5 dead in fiery South Lake Tahoe airplane crash; aircraft registered to Fresno man (VIDEO)
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 08/25/2012 - 10:02pmUPDATE 3:27PM: KOLO Reno Channel 8 reports the brother of the registered owner of the Piper that crashed in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night says all five people aboard died. Javier de la Mora says his brother, Francisco de la Mora, of Fresno was in the airplane when it crashed. Francisco's wife and daughter and two other people were on board as well. Go here for the full story.
UPDATE 2:56PM: The City of South Lake Tahoe issued the following news release and photos this afternoon:
A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff on Saturday, August 25th at 9:48 pm from Lake Tahoe Airport. The crash ignited a fire in the meadow just past the airport off of Winnemucca Avenue. The fire burned approximately one acre and took an hour and a half to extinguish.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department reports that the plane had been heard by witnesses to have apparent engine problems, and was seen to dip downward into the ground while attempting a turn.
According to Federal Aviation Administration, there were multiple victims and no survivors of the crash. The names of victims are not being released until notification of families is confirmed.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those that perished in this tragic accident. Thanks to the quick and cooperative efforts by multiple agencies; the fire caused by this crash was put out quickly,” said Mayor Claire Fortier.
Earlier in the day, the 23rd Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show was held at Lake Tahoe Airport. This plane was not affiliated with the air show in any way.
The location of the plane crash is within El Dorado County limits and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency of this investigation. FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials arrived on site today to perform an investigation and to identify the cause of the crash.
UPDATE 1:46PM: There are multiple victims to Saturday night's plane crash in South Lake Tahoe, confirmed El Dorado Sheriff's Office Lt. Pete Van Arnum. Investigators were processing the wreckage to confirm how many victims and their identities. Investigators do not believe the victims to be locals from the South Lake Tahoe area, he said. No information concerning the identity of the victims, or the plane will be released until positive confirmation has been made, he said. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are assisting with the investigation.

Where to buy a Lake Tahoe home...Nevada or California?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 08/02/2012 - 3:54pmJust a few years ago home buyers were choosing the Nevada side over the California side when looking for a Lake Tahoe home to purchase. Taxes were lower and schools were better so Nevada was more attractive. But is that still the feeling? There's good news, and bad news, depending on which neighborhood/state you're set on owning a home in.

Best bet: leave your pets at home during July 4 fireworks
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 07/03/2012 - 5:52pmIf you don't want to see the pooch get all aggro with people and other dogs on the beach during the July 4 fireworks show, your best is to leave 'em at home. So says the U.S. Forest Service, which wrote a friendly reminder to pet owners that the noise from the fireworks and large crowds can make your dog, cat, rat, snake, whatever — tense and agitated. And why would you want your pets to become unhinged as you and others are trying to watch the show?
