Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.
Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?
Move it online, of course.

Dear Community, The sold-out 30th annual Elegant Evening 2019 at Harrah’s Tahoe was a huge success and that was due to the generosity of businesses and friends near and far. We are beyond thrilled that our special appeal for Challenge Day was met and exceeded!

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra’s Elegant Evening 2018 at Harrah’s Tahoe was a huge success and that was due to the generosity of businesses and friends both near and far.
Thank you to all who attended this fun, entertaining and worthwhile event and those that donated to enable our support of the many programs and organizations we assist. BEAR League helps Oakland Zoo in creating new bear habitat

A mother Black Bear saved from being euthanized, along with her three cubs, are now calling the Oakland Zoo California Trail expansion their new home.

It won't be a far drive for friends and family of Joyzu when they head to South Lake Tahoe on New Year's Eve to watch the El Dorado Hills pair perform on the main state at SnowGlobe.
Carson Willms and Quinton Pope started playing music together while at Oakridge High, and continued their hobby when they both went away to college...Willms to Sacramento State and Pope to University of Colorado. That hobby is now their passion, and their business, as they release more songs and gather more fans of their unique genre.

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.
The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Lake Valley Fire promotes and hires seven, welcomes Chief Alameda

It wasn't your normal badge ceremony and pinning at Lake Valley Fire District firehouse in Meyers, a celebration of a new hire or new promotion. This time, it was historic, a ceremony that saw not only new new hires, but the promotion at all ranks in the department, including a new Fire Chief.
Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

To make way for "Star Wars," Disneyland is about to launch its largest expansion ever, which means shutting down a significant chunk of the Anaheim theme park.
In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.
Animal Ark Continues to Probe Tiger, Wolf Deaths

A Nevada wildlife sanctuary is awaiting test results from a California laboratory to determine what killed a tiger and wolf and seriously sickened a cheetah.
The Animal Ark near Reno says a 21-year-old tiger died on Feb. 6, a day before a 3-year-old wolf died and a 9-year-old cheetah was found comatose.
Officials at the nonprofit sanctuary say a barbiturate from an undetermined source is suspected as the cause of the deaths and illness after the cheetah tested positive for the drug. Food also hasn't been ruled out as the cause.

This July, Squaw Valley saddles up again for Wild West Weekend with a host of western-themed events high in the Sierra. Wild West Weekend offers adults and kids the opportunity to channel their inner-cowboys at the High Camp Corral for western-style fun. Pony rides, a petting zoo, western shoot-outs, and two days of live music are all part of the western weekend on July 21 and July 22.
Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe among several Nevada Tourism grant winners

Needed improvements at the Thunderbird Lodge got a lift on Wednesday when the Nevada Commission on Tourism announced the Lake Tahoe site was among several to win an improvement project grant.
Grants were awarded to 19 different projects. The announcement was made by Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.
NCOT's Projects Relating to Tourism Grants program help fund infrastructure improvements that will attract visitors, and after a temporary suspension due to a decline in tourism revenues, the grants were reinstated this year.
