There is a lake wind advisory in South Lake Tahoe Sunday with waves two to four feet expected until 7 p.m., with the biggest wave action on the east and northeast shores. Winds will be from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

The winds are in front of a fast moving low pressure system that will move across the Sierra and Western Nevada through Monday. It brings with it cold and snow showers starting on Sunday night.

A second wave of snowfall is possible late Monday afternoon and Monday night. According to the National Weather Service, the best chance for accumulating snow is south of Highway 50.

Upper elevations could see 6″ to 12″ of snow above 7,000 feet in the Sierra with 3″ to 6″ at lake level.

Expect slick and hazardous roads with possible travel delays over the passes. Chains and snow tires will be likely needed throughout the Sierra through Tuesday morning.

Monday Night – Scattered snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. North wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Tuesday – Mostly sunny, with a high near 38. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming west in the morning.

Tuesday Night – Mostly clear, with a low around 16.
