ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Congratulations to George Whittell High School which was named to the 2023 AP School Honor Roll! The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results and broadening access for students.

Schools can earn the Honor Roll recognition annually based on their ability to increase their school’s college-going culture, provide opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximize college readiness. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Brief traffic stoppages and delays will take place Monday, Nov. 13 at the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) summit as the Nevada Department of Transportation replaces an aging avalanche control system.

While the majority of traffic stoppages will be brief, traffic delays could last up to 30 minutes as a helicopter delivers roofing components as part of the final construction of the project. LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting a virtual auction through November 28 at midnight (PT). Funds raised go to support educational programs at the California State Parks in the Lake Tahoe – Donner Lake area. These educational programs for children of all ages are kept free of cost in order to build a more equitable park system. Supporting this fundraiser creates lifelong park and nature lovers. In addition, the fundraiser ends just in time for holiday gift shopping and will host exclusive, unique items and experiences.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy announced on Wednesday that roads and visitor facilities at Van Sickle Bi-State Park will close for the winter season on November 13. Park grounds will remain open to the public.

The Conservancy and Nevada State Parks co-manage the 725-acre Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The park provides day-use opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. For visitor safety, sledding is not allowed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School (STHS) is holding its annual Winter Fest from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both December 1 and 2. Coordinated by the school's special event students, most activities are free. Food will be available for purchase each evening, as will photos will Santa.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities will be completing an upgrade of the primary overhead powerline and secondary connections on Fallen Leaf Road between Emigrant Road and the Fallen Leaf Marina. Due to safety concerns, this work needs to be completed during daytime hours, resulting in road closures.

Installation of the new powerlines will require Liberty Utilities to close access to Fallen Leaf Road so that they can lay out the new lines and lift them into place.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe is inviting community members to join the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion in honoring all veterans this Veterans Day. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.

Light lunch refreshments and cake will be served.

The Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) shares a new campaign each month through its "Did You Know" series. This month, TASK is sharing ways to tackle the winter and holiday blues in both Spanish and English (Spanish is at the end of this column). In partnership with TASK, Sierra Child and Family Services, who operate the three Wellness Centers in South Lake Tahoe schools, will be promoting ways to manage the winter blues.
