CARSON CITY – The state Board of Finance was told today that Nevada now expects to receive between 30 and 33 cents on the dollar in recovery from a $50 million investment loss when Lehman Brothers unexpectedly filed for bankruptcy in September 2008.
Nevada state Treasurer Kate Marshall said the state initially expected only 10 to 11 cents on the dollar when the firm filed for bankruptcy protection during the height of the nation’s financial crisis.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will continue prescribed fires in several locations around the Lake Tahoe Basin beginning today. The controlled burns may take place near Meeks Bay on the West Shore, Slaughterhouse Canyon on the East Shore and near the end of Andria Drive on Kingsbury Grade. Locations and size of the operations will depend on conditions at each site. Operations may continue through the week and possibly through the weekend, weather permitting.

The March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake is a grim reminder of the potential for another strong-motion mega-earthquake along the Pacific Northwest coast, geophysicist John Anderson of the University of Nevada, Reno told members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in a lecture at their annual conference in Vancouver, B.C. Sunday.

For reasons that remain unclear among many in town, Caltrans wants to raise the speed limit by 5 mph through portions of South Lake Tahoe and Meyers. On Tuesday, city leaders and the community will hear presentations by Caltrans representatives regarding future plans.

Barton Health and other community organizations and businesses have joined forces to give South Lake Tahoe and its surrounding areas a “complete physical.”

According to Monica Sciuto, Community Health Needs Assessment Lead Coordinator and Director of Public Relations at Barton Health, “For years, healthcare has been focused on treating individuals. If we are going to create a healthcare system that is right for our area, we need to broaden that focus to the entire community. This project will help us accomplish that.”

Douglas County authorities have arrested a California fugitive from justice who was convicted of sexual assault on a minor.
Rick David Oliver, 47, of Yuba County, Calif., was captured by Douglas County Sheriff's authorities and the FBI on Friday afternoon after he was located in the 1100 block of Linda Anne Court in the east valley area of Gardnerville, said Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell.
The law agencies learned that Oliver was at the location, recently having fled California to avoid sentencing and capture from law enforcement, Howell said.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Jeff Cowen was honored as the recipient of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber and Resort Association’s Employee of the Year Award for his outstanding work as TRPA’s Community Liaison.
“I was shocked and truly honored to receive this recognition,” Cowen said about the award. “I am lucky in my job because I get to inform the community about all the great work being done by TRPA staff. I know I share this award with them,” he said.

A low pressure off the Pacific Northwest coast will move into Lake Tahoe Basin on Saturday morning, dropping temperatures to bring a nice powder dusting for the President's Day holiday ski and snowboard weekend.
Gusty winds to 30 mph are expected for valleys ahead of the front, with a quick burst of snow Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Updated Feb. 16, 5:08PM: Douglas County authorities have released surveillance photos of a Feb. 10 armed robbery at a Minden gas station and are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect and a possible accomplice.
A gun was drawn on a clerk and an undetermined amount of cash taken at the J&M Mini Mart in Minden on Friday Feb. 10.
