Avalanche search training continues this week at Mt. Rose Summit Highway

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District will continue its avalanche training on Wednesday and Friday at the Mt. Rose Summit Highway, across from the summit parking lot area.

Training objectives and stations will cover transceiver and RECCO search, proper probe line set up and execution, snow pit/snow pack information and a search dog demonstration.

Mountain Milers donate $2,300 to Lake Tahoe Heritage Foundation

Joe Tillson, President of the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, receives a donation of $2,300 from Rene Gorevin of the Tahoe Mountain Milers running club.

The club raised the money during the 2012 Kokanee Salmon Run. These funds will be used for projects at Taylor Creek Visitor Center (TCVC) and educational materials for next year's Kokanee Salmon Festival. South Lake Tahoe police Officer Johnny Poland is out of jail on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to be in court on Feb. 14 to face five federal charges related to witness and evidence tampering.

Weather systems unlikely to produce large snow amounts

A weak low pressure system will pass through region tonight, helping to increase winds and mix out valley inversions as well as bring light snow showers to the foothills and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels could drop between 5,500 feet to 6,500 feet with slush snow accumulation of about two inches possible above 6,000 feet through Thursday, said Jessica Kielhorn, meteorologist technician with the weather service.
