Middlebrook selected to fill former South Lake Tahoe council member's seat

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council voted Tuesday to appoint Devin Middlebrook as the interim city council member to fill John Friedrich's seat until December 10, 2024.

Councilmember Scott Robbins said he didn't see why they needed to make a move now with the election so close. By law, the council had to appoint someone before the election to ensure there is a quorum at each meeting and that city business could move forward without delay.

Washoe Intentional Fire Training to start at Lake Tahoe

Coffee With A Cop on Oct. 2 at Cuppa Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) of South Lake Tahoe is hosting another Coffee With A Cop on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Cuppa Tahoe from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The date coincides with National Coffee With A Cop Day, a day celebrated on the first Wednesday of October. The day's purpose is to encourage positive interactions and communication between law enforcement and the public.

Joining CHP at the coffee will be the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tuesday evening's meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council will start off with the naming of a new mayor pro-tem after the resignation of John Friedrich, and to divide up the committees he was part of among the other four councilmembers. A new person will be appointed to fill the seat in October but that term will be just two months until the newly elected candidates will take the dias.

False ad circulating in South Lake Tahoe, promising Mexican Consulate appointments

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once a year the Mexican Consulate visits South Lake Tahoe to assist residents in preparing and renewing their documents. The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center coordinates the visit and has been booking free appointments for 2024 since January.

This year, that visit is on Saturday, September 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bijou Community School Cafeteria but all appointments have already been booked.

First week of Fall brings above average temperatures to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first week of Fall will seem more Summer-like with highs in the mid- to upper 70s for maybe the last time we see a whole week of those temperatures until Spring! There will be a dry/mild pattern this week with light winds through Tuesday with increased southwest winds likely Wednesday with isolated areas of fire weather concerns across northeast California and northwest Nevada. Temperatures will remain around 3-7 degrees above season averages this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Major delays expected between Kings Beach and Tahoe City during Caltrans SR28 project

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are openings available for students in grades pre-K through 8th grade in South Lake Tahoe who need food for the weekend. Bread & Broth resumed its B&B 4 Kids (BBRK) School Year Weekend Food Bag program earlier this month and there is room for more kids to start benefitting from a bag of food each week. The bags contain three dinners, two breakfasts, two lunches, fresh fruit, and protein-enriched snacks to fill the weekend when free school meals aren't available.

World’s largest Sugar Pine discovered in Yosemite

On August 25, 2024, big tree hunters Michael Taylor, Carl Casey and Martin Crawford measured a massive sugar pine that they knew about in Yosemite National Park. The team calculated that it was not only the largest known sugar pine, but the largest pine tree on Earth.

I recently spoke with Taylor – who is the original and lead “discoverer” of this and many other champion trees and has recently pioneered that use of LiDAR to find tall trees – about how he found this incredible sugar pine. He initially put it very simply and said, “It has an unusual background, actually.”

Edgewood Tahoe to undergo clubhouse remodel

STATELINE, Nev. — Lake Tahoe's Edgewood Tahoe Resort has announced upcoming renovations to its clubhouse and Edgewood Restaurant. In partnership with Plant Construction Company, LP and Collaborative Design Studio, the project will be begin October 19, 2024, with a planned public reopening in June 2025.

The remodeling project will elevate the overall aesthetic of the clubhouse and enhance the fine dining experience currently offered at Edgewood Restaurant. The transformation will welcome a new and refined dining concept, with announcements coming soon from the property.

Nearly 175 teams came to Tahoe for 2024 Fall CUFA STFC Championship

South Tahoe Futbol Club experienced the most successful tournament weekend in the club's 38-year history last weekend at the 28th annual Come Up for Air (CUFA) tournament in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline.

Five teams won first-place trophies, and three more claimed runner-up finishes in the tournament that attracted nearly 175 teams in the bi-state event. During its three tournament weekends in spring and fall, CUFA attracts over 450 teams annually and provides an economic benefit of $2.5 million to local businesses.

Letter: Measure N is misguided and an egregious violation of private property rights

To The Editor: Some people around town ask why the Realtor Associations are so involved in the "No on N" campaign. At first blush, it might appear the effort is self-serving, and that's the distortion the "Yes on N" proponents are promoting.

But when you dig a little deeper, that allegation could not be further from the truth. If Measure N passes, the Realtor community will benefit greatly.

Christmas Tree permit program in Lake Tahoe Basin paused for next several years

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - They gave us a heads-up last year, and now the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has made the official announcement that their Christmas Tree permit program will pause in 2024. The pause will last for several years due to limited cutting areas suitable for gathering Christmas trees.

Over the last two decades, most legal and safe areas to park during snow removal conditions have been cleared of suitable trees or are currently being treated for forest health and fuel reduction projects.

TTD updates Bus Route 50 in South Lake Tahoe to run every 30 minutes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) has made some updates to its routes that will make getting around Lake Tahoe more convenient for the South Lake Tahoe community and visitors. Starting this week, Route 50 has increased its frequency and will now run every 30 minutes, ensuring more flexibility and easier connections for everyone. The bus remains free to ride.

WNC professor: Lake Tahoe is North America’s oldest freshwater, permanent lake, 3rd oldest in world

Before considerable scientific research by Western Nevada College Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier, it was understood that Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, was created during the Pleistocene era, also known as the Ice Age, roughly 10,000 to 2.6 million years ago.

Through her radiometric dating of rocks and examining the basalt that has interacted with the water of Lake Tahoe, Dr. Kortemeier has determined that the lake is 2.3 million years old.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office to host 3nd annual K9 Unit Challenge and Public K9 Obstacle Course

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the 3rd annual K9 Unit Challenge and Public K9 Obstacle Course on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fuji Park in Carson City.

Dozens of K9s from multiple agencies will compete in three primary events: patrol apprehension, odor detection, and agility. Apprehension and Agility events will be on full display at Fuji’s main arena, where there are bleachers for public viewing (and cheering).

Chase International Foundation awards $12,500 to area non-profits

Tahoe Knight Monsters add veteran NHL talent with Center Luke Adam

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights announced today that the team has agreed to terms with center Luke Adam for the 2024-25 season.

Adam, 34, comes to Tahoe after spending the last eight years abroad. He played seven seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) from 2016-2023, and split time last year with HC Plzeň in Czechia and HC Banska Bystrica in Slovakia. In that 2023-24 season, he played 28 games and totaled 15 points (5g 10a).

AT&T agrees to get the lead cables out of Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From Baldwin Beach to Rubicon Bay and inside Emerald Bay there are approximately six miles of submerged century-old cables containing about 107,000 pounds of lead in Lake Tahoe.
