A fast start didn't translate into a strong finish for the South Tahoe High School football team in its season home opener on Friday night.
Churchill County scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to pull away for a 53-17 Northern 3A victory in a game that marked the unveiling of the Vikings' renovated stadium that now features Field Turf and permanent lights.
South Tahoe took a 14-7 lead in its opening two possessions as Jacob Stowell struck pay dirt on runs of 5 and 68 yards. Stowell rushed for 164 yards on 20 carries in the first half.

South Tahoe High School will celebrate the unveiling of its renovated Viking Bowl facility tonight by hosting Churchill County in a Northern 3A football contest.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on a field that has been converted from natural to synthetic turf and now has permanent lighting.
South Tahoe kicked off its season last Friday with a 35-12 victory at Portola, Calif.
Tonight will be the league opener for both the Vikings and Churchill County Greenwave (Fallon).
