SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has announced the launch of a $350,000 community playground campaign, “Let the Kids Play,” to upgrade the Al Tahoe playground.

The current Al Tahoe playground is over 25 years old, having been built in the late 1990s for Al Tahoe Elementary School and the community surrounding it. Since the elementary school closed in 2004, there have been no upgrades or improvements to the neglected playground, resulting in many areas now being boarded up, decrepit, and unsuitable for play.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Magic will soon celebrate 30 years of bringing “magic” to thousands of individuals and their families at a time when they desperately needed it. Founded as a non-profit in 1994, each year Tahoe Magic has assisted hundreds of families with children experiencing a financial crisis, with financial assistance. Tahoe Magic achieved this because we truly have a community that cares about each other.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – After taking a break from burning during the week of Thanksgiving, Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) members are scheduled to resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All night meetings of the South Lake Tahoe City Council must end at 10 p.m. unless voted on unanimously by the council members to go late. During their November 21 meeting, an extra-long consent agenda discussion pushed the final agenda item, a vote on proposed cannabis ordinance changes up to 10 p.m. without a vote.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and businessman, Mark Cohen, passed away on August 20, 2023 in Bothell, Washington at the age of 77. Mark was born on July 9th, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to Harry and Mildren Cohen and he was an only child. He graduated from Westchester High School in 1964 and went on to study at Santa Monica City College earning his associate’s degree and later transferring to UCLA. He met Virginia Martin, and the couple was married in February 1968.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The official lighting of the Christmas tree at Heavenly Village on Friday brought out the crowds to watch Santa Claus arrive as the tree was lit amidst fireworks, entertainment, and speeches from some elected officials.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in grand style aboard the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue ladder truck. Their arrival captivated the audience, setting the tone for an evening full of holiday cheer and community spirit. The Clauses made their way to the stage, greeted by the excited cheers of the whole crowd, young and old.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - St. Theresa Bread & Broth is honored to announce the awarding of a Pay It Forward Project (PIFP) grant of $7,000 to fund their Second Serving meal annually. PIFP strives to encourage community members to make a difference through volunteerism and supports organizations that are non-profits and are staffed by local volunteers.

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club hosted veterans at a special dinner at the Tahoe Beach Club, thanking them for their service from World War II to the War on Terrorism.

TubeTahoe has been making snow on their hills in Meyers, and will be opening on Saturday, November 25! The hours for opening day are 9 p.m. to 4 p.m.

STATELINE, Nev. - The second-grade classes from Zephyr Cove Elementary School were able to get a first-hand experience of how the justice system works. Judge Michael Johnson of the Tahoe Township Justice Court greeted the enthusiastic students of teachers Marissa Besson and Brittney Boulet and provided an eye-opening and educational experience.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, California State Parks, in partnership with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the California Natural Resources Agency, is expanding its popular California State Park Adventure Pass from 19 select state parks to 54. The pilot program, currently in its third year, allows California fourth graders and fourth-grade teachers free admission to participating parks until Aug. 31, 2024. The public can find a park near them at parks.ca.gov/AdventurePass.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - As a way to prevent home fires caused by irresponsibly discarded ashes from fireplace (both indoor and outdoor) and woodburning stoves, local fire departments are offering ash cans, free of charge, as well as locations for free ash disposal.

Too often a garbage bag filled with warm ashes is placed on a wooden deck or near a home after being removed from a stove or fireplace, causing a fire. If the bag survived a night or two on the deck, warm ashes picked up by the refuse company on trash day can cause fires inside the trucks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the locally-created and produced documentary "Momentum" premiers nationally on PBS, a youth mentorship program is being launched in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe City Council considered a change to the local cannabis ordinance that would allow on-site consumption at the four permitted retail businesses in town. At the time, they expressed concerns about allowing onsite consumption as there were no robust alternative transportation options available for customers who may become impaired, and there were no measurable limits for testing cannabis impairment while driving, unlike alcohol.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Ahead of the holiday giving season, the Tahoe Fund is launching a $25,000 matching campaign to support Achieve Tahoe’s summer recreation programs for people with disabilities and their families. Thanks to a generous match provided by Putnam Lexus, courtesy of Marty and Anne Putnam, the Tahoe Fund is doubling all donations to this program given before December 31, 2023, to reach their $50,000 goal.

The City Council agenda scheduled for Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m. will have a discussion and possible action deciding whether to move forward with a study of becoming a charter city.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council will be taking steps at its meeting Tuesday to add a November 2024 ballot measure to become a charter city and raise the tourist accommodation tax (TOT) by another two percent.

On the agenda this week is an item to hire a polling firm for $107,500 to poll the public on a TOT increase of two percent and moving to a charter city status with a focus on adding a real estate transfer tax. If approved, the firm of Lew Edwards Group would be hired to provide consulting and outreach services for a possible ballot measure.
