Author to Speak about Squaw's 1960 Olympics

Event Date:
February 13, 2018 - 7:00pm

Join the Lake Tahoe Historical Society at their first 'Fireside Chat' of the year on February 13 at 7:00 p.m. David Antonucci will share the exciting story of how, in 1960, the eyes of the world focused on Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe as the Winter Olympics played out for the first time on television.

Athletes from a world locked in the epic Cold War converged to compete and share the spirit and ideals of the Olympic movement. In Mr. Antonucci’s illustrated presentation, you will hear about, and see, vignettes that describe the individual stories of enigma and invention, written off underdogs that ultimately come out on top, and a promise to win gold made to a terminally ill loved one. You will learn about the first “Miracle on Ice” hockey gold medal by the American “Team of Destiny.”

The presentation is based on David Antonucci’s book, "Snowball’s Chance: The Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games" which will be available for purchase and signing. Camp Richardson's Historic Hotel, 1900 Jameson Beach Rd. Cost is $3 to attend, free for LTHS members.

This is the Lake Tahoe Historical Society's 50th anniversary year and they will be having events such as Fireside Chats all year long. Memberships will be available at the February 13 event, starting at $5 for children, $20 for seniors and $25 for individuals. Family and business rates are also available.
