STHS grad Kate Lambdin completes challenging Antartica Marathon

When one thinks of Antartica they most likely don't think of the continent as a place to vacation, let alone a place to run a marathon. But 200 runners did just that March 16-17, 2018 when they tackled a challenging 26.2 course on King George’s Island.
Former South Tahoe High School runner, Kate Lambdin, departed in early March for the two week adventure that began in Buenos Aires-before continuing on to Ushuaia. There she boarded one of the Russian polar vessels that was home for the 10-day expedition to the ‘last continent’. Lambdin, a member of the South Tahoe High School state championship cross country team coached by Dan Wilvers and Nancy Dalton, moved to Los Angeles after graduating from San Jose State University.
The race, split into two days for the two ships, was run between research stations on the island and consisted of hills, mud, ice, snow and gravel. Lambdin completed the marathon in 4 hours, 12 minutes to finish 13th place overall, 4th female and winning the 40 and under age category for females.
Organized by Marathon Tours & Travel (MTT), since 1995 this race has provided a unique running challenge for adventure athletes while maintaining a commitment to protecting the environment. MTT takes its role in preserving Antarctica very seriously. For example, they use two ships to limit the number of runners and supporters at 100 on each of the two days to ensure minimal impact. This year the runners raised $50,235 for Oceanites, a non-profit scientific organization focused on Antarctica.
The Antarctica event was first created to enable runners to set and reach the once unthinkable goal of finishing a marathon or half-marathon on all seven continents. Lambdin, a member of the Seven Continents Club (SCC) is on the mission to complete this goal. The Antarctica marathon is the 4th continent in which she’s completed a marathon.
