Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration at Dangberg Historic Park

Event Date:
August 22, 2015 - 10:00am

Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group will demonstrate cooking with Dutch ovens in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 22, at 10:00 am.

The name "Dutch Oven" is most commonly applied to a cast iron pot or kettle with a flat bottom having three legs to hold the oven above the coals, flat sides and a flat, flanged lid for holding coals. Westward bound settlers took Dutch ovens with them. A Dutch oven was among the gear Lewis and Clark carried when they explored the great American Northwest. Mormon pioneers who settled the American West also took along Dutch ovens. Mountain men exploring the great American frontier used Dutch ovens into the late 19th century. Chuck wagons accompanying western cattle drives also carried Dutch ovens from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century.

Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group is comprised of Dutch oven enthusiasts of all levels – especially beginners. Their goal is to learn and enjoy the traditional style of Dutch oven cooking while having fun. They encourage Dutch oven cooks of all levels to participate in their activities, share recipes and tips, and generally promote their passion for Dutch oven cooking.

As part of their presentation, Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group will demonstrate cooking a cobbler, sharing the finished product with the audience. They will also provide each guest with a raffle ticket towards various prizes.

This is a free outdoor event. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or use one of the park’s chairs. A shaded seating area is available. Dogs are not permitted in the park, with the exception of certified service animals. For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org or call 775-783-9417.
