As incoming high school students prepare for the upcoming fall semester, they should also set aside time to explore where they might want to attend college.

So says educator Leslie Hermann, founder of Edplanit.org, an Incline Village-based educational consulting agency which focuses its energies on guiding high school students through the college application and admissions processes.

To that end, this month Hermann and her colleagues are hosting a college fair and a college Bootcamp.

The free-to-attend college fair takes place Thursday, Aug. 22 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m., in the gym at Incline High School, 499 Village Blvd., Incline Village. The fair is open to all students entering grades 9 - 12 and their families, regardless of where the students will be enrolled in the fall or if they are homeschooled.
Belmont University, Cal Poly, Colorado College, Cornell University, Evergreen State College, Gonzaga University, Lewis and Clark College, Miami University of Ohio, Santa Clara University, Sierra Nevada College, University of Colorado, University of Denver, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Vermont and Willamette University have pledged to have staff present to answer questions and supply pertinent information about their respective campuses.

“The fair provides students and parents a chance to talk face-to-face with representatives from some of the nation’s finest schools, be they here in the West, in the Midwest, or along the East Coast,” Hermann said. “And we’re working to have even more universities participate.”

Attendees can learn about the Common Application, which is accepted at more than 800 colleges (www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/common-app). They can also inquire as to where they ought to be in the process of choosing a school per their respective grade levels.

COLLEGE PREP BOOTCAMP AT SIERRA NEVADA COLLEGE, AUG. 19 - 23

Hermann and her edplanit.org team also are hosting a 5-day bootcamp for incoming high school juniors and seniors, giving them a jump start on the college application process.

The camp takes place Aug. 19 - 23, from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. each day, at Sierra Nevada College, 999 Tahoe Blvd., Incline Village. On the first day students will meet in room TCES 206.

“You’ll spend 15 invaluable hours engaging in critical college-prep activities,” Hermann said.

Those activities include: narrowing the list of schools to which one will apply; understanding early decision, early action and regular admission; learning what is needed to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Oct. 1; evaluating college essays written by former applicants; writing personal statement and college-specific essays; investigating scholarship opportunities and creating a calendar for senior year that includes all deadlines for applications and scholarships.

Incoming seniors will also have the opportunity to get feedback on their essays from admissions counselors at the aforementioned Aug.22 college fair taking place in the Incline High School Gym from 4 p.m. - 7 p..m. that day.

While the fair is free, the Bootcamp runs $100 per student and is open to any interested student. Needs-based scholarships are available, as well.

Admission to the Bootcamp is free to students who are members of, or who join the Duffield Youth Program of the Boys and Girls Club of North Tahoe. To do so, see campscui.active.com/orgs/BoysGirlsClubofNorthLakeTahoe?orglink=camps-registration#/selectSessions/2631401 .

Bootcamp and fair sponsors are the Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe; Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation; Edplanit.org; Hyatt Lake Tahoe Resort; Casino Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort and Sierra Nevada College.
