Stormwater Symposium at LTCC

Event Date:
December 10, 2014 - 5:30pm

The public will have a chance to learn about agency efforts to address stormwater pollution and get involved at a stormwater symposium on December 10 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The symposium will be hosted by the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and League to Save Lake Tahoe. A panel will follow comprised of various agencies tasked with monitoring and preventing stormwater pollution. Agencies involved include Lahontan Environmental Specialist, Robert Larsen; City of South Lake Tahoe Stormwater Program Coordinator, Jason Burke; League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Deputy Director, Jesse Patterson; Tahoe RCD’s Stormwater Coordinator, Andrea Buxton; and Tahoe RCD Videographer and League’s Pipe Keeper, Dylan Eichenberg.

“This is a great opportunity for interested citizens to become engaged in the urban stormwater monitoring efforts and to begin a public/private dialogue about the importance of stormwater management in the Lake Tahoe Basin.” Kim Gorman, Tahoe RCD’s, director of programs.

The Tahoe RCD leads the Regional Stormwater Monitoring Program, which collects data from stations around the Lake Tahoe Basin. The program helps jurisdictions in California and Nevada comply with policies that mandate stormwater pollution reduction. The program also helps policy makers and the public better understand how stormwater projects are benefiting Lake Tahoe.

The League’s Pipe Keepers volunteer program is entering its third year, engaging over 30 volunteers who monitor stormwater pipes that flow into Lake Tahoe. Water samples are collected by volunteers and analyzed by staff. Through partnerships Pipe Keeper data can be integrated into the Regional Stormwater Monitoring Program efforts. This information has the ability to assist in reducing the impacts of urban stormwater pollution in Lake Tahoe.

“We are excited to partner with the Tahoe RCD to inform the public on the impacts of stormwater runoff, discuss what agencies are doing, and talk about steps that community members can take to help,” Marilee Movius, the League’s community engagement manager.
