Lake Tahoe Community College has significantly closed equity gaps on its campus

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is one of a handful of California community colleges that has significantly closed equity gaps and increased success rates for Latinx students, according to a new report from the Public Policy Institute of California.

City of South Lake Tahoe joins in “Pay It Forward” initiative with $10,000 donation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Paying it forward has spread quickly through the South Lake Tahoe community this holiday season, and now the City is joining in to help those in need while at the same time helping out small locally-owned restaurants.

The “Pay It Forward” initiative involves community members and organizations contributing money to open tabs at local restaurants. It’s a program that helps those in need and helps support the restaurants when they need it the most.

South Lake Tahoe woman dies from COVID-19, Go Fund Me set up to help with expenses

A South Lake Tahoe woman has become the 11th resident of El Dorado County to die from COVID-19. Elda Yadira Dueñas passed away at Barton Memorial Hospital on December 16, 2020.

South Lake Tahoe's Dr. Henning Mehrens retires

Henning Mehrens, MD, has spent over 45 years keeping the South Lake Tahoe community healthy and will be missed as he retires and is off to the next chapter of his life.
Both through his private practice as well as at Tahoe Urgent Care, Dr. Mehrens worked both tirelessly and passionately for those he cared for. Besides maintaining those offices he was also the medical director of the Skilled Nursing Facility at Barton Memorial Hospital.

Open letter to the South Lake Tahoe community:

It was a great honor to serve as a member of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees for the last four years. As previously reported, I am stepping aside to focus on my career and raising my beautiful baby girl. I said many times while I was on the Board that every family in the District was my family, and every child in the District was my responsibility. Now that I have a child of my own, I think the parents of LTUSD will understand when I say that I need to focus on my own family for the time being.

Food assistance in South Lake Tahoe through the holidays

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many people in the South Lake Tahoe area could use some extra help during the holidays, and local sources of free food are available to help ease some needs.

Bread & Broth will be open on Monday, December 21 and 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with bags of food. Also, their Friday food bag operation will not be open on Christmas Day but will resume on New Year's Day, January 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are located at St. Theresa Grace Hall at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Del Laine, South Lake Tahoe trailblazer, dies at the age of 90

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A true trailblazer in the forming of the City of South Lake Tahoe has died at the age of 90. Del Laine, passed away from natural causes with her family at her side.

She served on South Lake Tahoe's City Council from 1976-1980, and then again from 1984-1988 and became the City's first female Mayor in 1977. She would go on to serve one more term as Mayor during her time on council.

Tahoe athletes to offer backcountry safety tips during free live panel session

Featuring some of the biggest names in skiing and snowboarding, the inaugural Tahoe Backcountry Awareness Week will culminate with the Athlete Summit on Thursday, December 17. The free virtual event, designed to encourage those planning to venture into the backcountry to educate themselves before doing so, will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a live Q&A period with Michelle Parker, Jeremy Jones, Elyse Saugstad, Cody Townsend and Amie Engerbretson.

Humane Society in South Lake Tahoe has free dog and cat food to help pet owners

The South Lake Tahoe community has not only been donating food to help their human neighbors, but also for their four-legged pets.

The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee (HSTT) office in South Lake Tahoe has shelves full of pet food that if ready for pickup by pet owners who need assistance.

Their office is located at 3438 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Flatstick Pub with indoor mini-golf coming to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Flatstick Pub Norcal will be adding a second California location in South Lake Tahoe at 4101 Lake Tahoe Boulevard between Ace High Saloon & Smokehouse and the Big Vista Clothing Store in the Zalanta, across from Heavenly Village.

Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe provides 600 coats to local youth; New members welcome

COVID-19 testing available on LTCC campus through winter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) will continue to serve as an appointment-only COVID-19 testing center through March 31, 2021. The college’s standalone Physical Education building is the only large-scale COVID-19 active virus testing site operating in El Dorado County.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks community for Thanksgiving meal

Bread & Broth’s holiday Thanksgiving meal giveaway on November 23 was a tremendous success thanks to the kindness of many generous community supporters. In addition to the regular bags filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, eggs, butter, bread and pastries, 170 holiday meal “fixings” bags were handed out in the foyer of St. Theresa Grace Hall. The Thanksgiving meals went to 549 very grateful individuals and family members.

Column: COVID’s current impact on our community

The COVID-19 virus is widespread throughout the South Lake Tahoe community. Transmission is taking place at its highest rate to date largely due to cooler weather moving gatherings indoors. Any gathering outside of your immediate household is now the largest vehicle for spread.

Bread & Broth provides Thanksgiving bags of food for over 500 local residents

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The volunteers at Bread & Broth packed bags of food for the community Monday, bags full of food for not only a Thanksgiving meal, but for meals through the week.

From 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on November 23, almost 200 people picked up bags for their families containing a turkey breast, yams, green beans, rolls, stuffing, pumpkin pie, sparkling apple cider, fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk and much more. Those bags of food went to feed 549 individuals in the South Lake Tahoe community.

Blue Ribbon Awards winners announced during virtual awards show

The winners of the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday, November 19 during an awards show shown on Lake Tahoe Television. In place of the annual awards dinner the community was invited to tune in virtually with hosts Chris Fiore from the City of South Lake Tahoe and Meg Peart from the Tahoe Resource Conservation District. LTCC awarded Blue Ribbon Tallac Achievement Award for Mobility Hub project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and its new Mobility Hub won the Tallac Achievement Award during the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards Thursday evening.

The award is given to an exemplary infrastructure project that revitalizes and enhances the economy and community of Tahoe’s South Shore.

Barton Health updates community on their surge preparedness

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The safety of patients and healthcare workers is Barton Health’s top priority. The health care system has operations in place to continue to meet the demand for medical services as COVID-19 cases surge across the nation and Lake Tahoe. After preparation for the anticipated increase of patient volume this fall and winter, aspects of Barton’s plan are being implemented to meet the needs for patient care.

Bread & Broth seeks donations for South Lake Tahoe Community Thanksgiving meals

Bread & Broth is seeking donations for a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway that will be distributed on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. Theresa Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

During past Thanksgiving holidays, Bread & Broth has sponsored a hot Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings, once that guests could enjoy with the fellowship of others in the community. During those dinners over 250 individuals joined in the special holiday meal.

This year will have to be different due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Ballot counts for El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe

10:46 P.M. UPDATE: Both El Dorado County and Douglas County have released an updated count at this hour. For El Dorado County, 149 of 209 precincts have now been tabulated. Depending on the area, Douglas County shows about 72 percent of Tuesday's votes listed.

Tahoe Chamber announces finalists for 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two new thought-provoking art exhibits at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) can be enjoyed in a safe and virtual manner.

In LTCC's Haldan Gallery is Loren Madsen's "Worry Beads," a large sculpture of wood-carved beads strung together like a chain, with each bead representing one year between 1945 to 2017. Each individual bead's size tells a story about how many terrorist-caused deaths occurred in that year globally. It makes for a sublime piece of woodworking skill and a powerful political statement.

SnowGlobe cancels its South Lake Tahoe music festival for 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Organizers of SnowGlobe, the annual music festival held in South Lake Tahoe, have canceled their 10th annual event due to safety concerns.

"2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenges and we wanted more than anything to be a bright spot in this otherwise bleak year - but after close consultation with local and state health officials regarding the impact of COVID-19, we've made the difficult decision to cancel this year's festival," said SnowGlobe on their Twitter announcement Wednesday.

Al Tahoe Firewise Community volunteers to perform property assessments

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the support of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR), the Al Tahoe neighborhood has begun the process of becoming a certified Firewise USA ® recognized neighborhood.

As part of the application process, SLTFR and Al Tahoe community volunteers will be walking in the Al Tahoe neighborhood October 27-30 and performing random wildfire risk assessment/evaluations on 20 percent of the 1520 properties from the street.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. — The limited-edition Lake Tahoe Commemorative Coin is now available to the public, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation (Parasol) announced this week.

Strong early voter turnout in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Of the 133,251 registered voters in El Dorado County, 30,886, or 23 percent, have already turned in their ballots. The elections department does not have data from the 2016 election at the same point in time. That election had 97,024 or 83.31 percent of the 116,459 registered that year, turn in ballots by election day.

As of October 15:

Ballots returned by mail - 14,966
​Ballots returned in a drop box - 15,920

Of those ballots, 28,996 have had signatures verified against reference signature and the balance of 1,890 are awaiting verification.

STPUD candidates respond to questions

Live Your Dream award offered by Soroptimists of Tahoe Sierra

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra are once again awarding a $2,000 Live Your Dream Award to a deserving woman from the South Lake Tahoe area.

Since 1972, Soroptimist International has given the Live Your Dream Awards to women who are working to better their lives through additional schooling and skills training.

New forestry program headed to Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new Forestry Education and Job Placement program is heading to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) in South Lake Tahoe.

To get things started, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded the college a $351,000 grant and $480,000 was received from CAL Fire’s Forest Health Grant Program. LTCC has hired Kim Carr as their contracted consultant on the project and she helped write the grants and secure funding for the new avenue of education in South Lake Tahoe. She is bringing 30 years of forestry and environmental experience to the college.

53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation

Local nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.

City Council candidates respond to 100% Renewable Energy Committee questions

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to: 1) Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032 and 2) Reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040, and reduce municipal emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF), a philanthropic leadership organization, is dedicated to building and engaging an inclusive and diverse membership of women interested in strengthening the South Lake Tahoe community through the power of collective giving.

TWCF is a collective giving organization created in 2015. Through a simple grant making process, the annual proceeds from membership provide financial support to nonprofits that address pressing issues facing the communities of Lake Tahoe.

Deadline September 30 for South Lake Tahoe COVID-19 receipts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe created two programs to help local business owners during COVID-19, a restaurant vouchers and reimbursement of expenses used to open under new health protocols.

Both of these will be ending at the end of the City's fiscal year on September 30.

During the City Council meeting Tuesday, staff reminded everyone in the business community to turn in their receipts and restaurant vouchers by that date.

LTCC offers ESL, Citizenship and High School Equivalency courses

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College offers noncredit citizenship classes along with English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Equivalency (HSE) courses. Even though registration is wrapping up, the flexibility of these noncredit classes allows students to still get started.

As part of the course, they assist students in filling out forms, provide practice interviews and assist with learning English. While the class is in English, assistance is provided for students in Spanish and other languages, if needed. This quarter, the classes are via live Zoom.

Flu Shot Clinics set for South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Alpine County

Each year flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States. While it is unclear what will happen this fall and winter, if there is COVID-19 and
flu at the same time, this could place a tremendous burden on our health care systems and cause many additional illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. Now more than ever, it’s important that everyone do their part to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, like flu and COVID-19, according to Alpine County Health Officer Dr. Richard Johnson.

Homeless man arrested after fire found near Trout Creek in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emergency crews responded to the Trout Creek meadow behind Lake Tahoe Community College on Saturday at about 2:00 p.m. after receiving a call about a homeless man starting a fire.

When officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrived they located the fire and extinguished it with water from the river, according to Lt. Travis Cabral.

At the fire was 36-year-old Dustin Travis Myers, a homeless man who Cabral said tried to dissuade them from filing charges.

South Lake Tahoe blood drives set; Free testing of COVID-19 antibodies
