Lake Wind Advisory and Winter Storm Warning issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory and Winter Storm Warning for the next system heading to Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday for Lake Tahoe. Expect southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and waves of 2 to 4 feet.

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday. NWS Reno is calling for heavy snow with snow accumulations of 8 to 14 inches for Lake Tahoe communities such as Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, and 12 to 24 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph in lower elevations and 80 to 100 mph along Sierra ridges. Wave heights on Lake Tahoe are expected to be 2 to 5 feet.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Very cold temperatures settling in Wednesday night may prolong travel issues into Thursday morning. Very strong winds could cause damage to trees and power lines.

The temperatures on Tuesday are forecast to be a low of 17 and a high of 38.
Wednesday, the low is 4, and the high is 32.
