Douglas County commissioners once again have VHRs on their Thursday agenda

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of Commissioners will hold its next meeting on Thursday, January 18 starting at 10 a.m. It will be held in the courthouse in Minden and can also be viewed on YouTube.

Two items on the agenda deal with vacation home rentals (VHRs). Commissioner Danny Tarkanian has asked for updates to the VHR ordinance several times over the last two years. Last month, he asked for a ban on VHRs north of Cave Rock, and that was approved by a majority of the other commissioners.

This month, he is asking for an amendment to the current ordinance for VHRs at Lake Tahoe. They are currently not allowed in other areas of the county.

There will be discussion on the possible amendments related to the number or
"density" of VHR permits allowed within residential communities in the Tahoe Township, and related restrictions, including:

- Identifying residential communities where VHR-related issues continue to exist
- Creating or revising limitations for those residential communities related to density, occupancy, parking, and/or other related factors
- Establishing methods to achieve compliance with any new or revised limitations

Commission Vice Chairperson Sharla Hales has asked for the second VHR agenda item to be brought forward. They will discuss the possibility of taking no further action to review or propose changes to the Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rentals ordinance until January 2025 to allow the most recent changes to the Vacation Home Rental Program and code enforcement practices to take effect.

Possible action may include directing staff to collect data related to the efficacy of the program and to report back to the commissioners.

There is also the possibility of a vote initiative to ban VHRs. The group gathering the needed signatures to put the item on the ballot has turned in their paperwork. County officials will now have to count and verify those signatures.

Other items on the agenda:

A presentation by the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority, the Tahoe Douglas Visitor's Authority, and the Tahoe Chamber on funding received from
Douglas County, how the funds are used, and the activities engaged in by each entity.

There will also be a presentation on V&T Trails including the history, progress, and future of the Historic Virginia and Truckee Trail.

There will also be possible votes on the 2023 Douglas County Comprehensive Trails Plan, appointments to several commissions, and the Strategic Plan.
