South Lake Tahoe forecast: Snow, snow, and some more snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A wintry week is on tap for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Western Nevada with at least two winter storms impacting the region. The first arrives Sunday night and the second is shaping up as a blockbuster storm for the Sierra with wind and snow impacts Tuesday night through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. An active and moist onshore flow is forecast to continue through the weekend and into early February.

Sunday night until Monday morning, with a Winter Weather Advisory until 10:00 a.m. January 25. Roughly 1-4 inches of snow across western Nevada and 3-6 inches with higher amounts up to 12 inches in the Sierra by Monday afternoon. This system will also bring a rush of cold air with afternoon highs stuck in the 20s for the Sierra. Those heading up in the higher elevations Monday should be prepared for temperatures below 20.

Tuesday - A Winter Storm Watch is in place for Tuesday afternoon through Thursday night. This is a significant winter storm with heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet, with 3 to 6 feet above 7000 feet possible. Winds could gust up to 40 in the lower elevations and in excess of 80 mph over ridges leading to whiteout conditions. Whiteout conditions and high snowfall rates will lead to very, very difficult to impossible travel conditions, according to NWS Reno.

Monday - Snow likely, mainly before 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 28. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Monday Night - A 30 percent chance of snow before 11pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 8. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday - A 30 percent chance of snow after 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night - Snow, mainly after 11pm. Low around 18. South wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Wednesday - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 36. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches possible.

Wednesday Night - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 26. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Thursday - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Cloudy, with a high near 37.
