LTUSD preparing for possible changes to transitional kindergarten ages

SOUTH LAK TAHOE, Calif. - There is a proposal under consideration in California to provide universal transitional kindergarten (TK) access to all students who turn five during a school year. This will impact districts in California differently depending on space availability. Currently, students are eligible for TK if they turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd. Students who turn 5 by September 1 are already eligible to enter kindergarten.

Should the proposal be approved, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is planning to expand TK starting in the 2022-23 school year. Students with birthdays between September 2nd and February 2nd will be guaranteed a spot in TK in 2022-23. Students with birthdays from February 3rd through June 30 will be enrolled in birthday order, depending on space availability.

The District's current plan is to house the TK students at Tahoe Valley Elementary School, Bijou Community School, and possibly at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School.

To assist with staffing and space needs, LTUSD will be collecting interest via a Google form starting this week for all incoming LTUSD students with 5th birthdays between September 2, 2022 through June 30, 2023.

The link to the form is here: https://forms.gle/rbFQPkUkF57SQbgG7 Funding and enrollment numbers will help determine further TK expansion to additional schools.
