Snowshoe Thompson Expedition following the 1856 mail carrier's original route

Five ultra-athletes will retrace the steps of John "Snowshoe" Thompson's inaugural mail route which he began on January 3, 1856, from Placerville, Calif. to Genoa, Nev., 90 miles away and across the snowbound Sierra Nevada.

The Snowshoe Thompson Expedition team will complete their journey over five days and carry a GPS tracker enabling live updates of their progress which followers can track here.

The expedition's leader, Bob Crowley, will be in South Lake Tahoe just before taking off on the journey at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society's 21st annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration on Sunday, March 3 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum Complex. Events for Participation

1. Track the Expedition Team live over the 100-mile trek

2. Wed Mar 6, 6:45 a.m.: Come out to a send-off ceremony in Placerville, on March 6th.

3. Sat Mar 9, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.: Join them in Sheridan for a Fireside Chat and Thompson campfire stories.

4. Sun Mar 10, 11:30 a.m.: Come out and greet the arrival of the Expedition Team in Genoa and walk with us to the Thompson gravesite

5. Sun Mar 10, 12 p.m.: Attend a ceremony at Thompson's gravesite, Genoa Cemetery.

6. Sun Mar 10, 1 p.m.: Attend a presentation and panel by the Expedition Team at Genoa Town Hall

7. Recording of live streamcast with renowned Thompson author, Frank Tortorich.
