Credit/debit card skimmer found at South Lake Tahoe 7-11

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A credit card skimming device was found on a machine in the 7-11 store at the east end of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday. A customer noticed the blinking lights didn't show up as they normally do when he went to tap his credit card for payment.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is asking the public to check their credit and debit cards if they were at the 7-11 store, located at 3923 Pioneer Trail. They don't know yet when the device was added and the store's security film is currently being reviewed, but it could have been there for at least the last few days.

Credit card skimmers haven't been found in South Lake Tahoe since one was found on an ATM after the 4th of July weekend in 2021.

A “skimmer” device is placed on a credit card reader and thieves will use it to steal people’s personal information.

SLTPD advises the public to either monitor balances or as a further precaution, cancel whatever card was used at the 7-11. Other local businesses should check their machines for any tampering. Police are working with 7-11 management to review surveillance video and further investigate the case. Anybody with information or have become a victim of fraud in the past couple of days should call SLTPD at (530) 542-6100.
