Explosion damages Delta Saloon in Virginia City

An explosion Tuesday morning at the historic Delta Saloon in Virginia City sent glass, brick and parts of the building into the street.

The explosion occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m. March 12.

The saloon, home of the Suicide Table, Silver Kings, and the $100000 Miners Globe, suffered extensive damage. C Street in the town was closed for a while but has reopened this afternoon.

Storey County offices were evacuated and employees moved to a safe location, but returned to work when deemed safe. The courthouse is open for normal business through the south parking lot door.

The Delta Saloon was opened in 1862 and its current version with museum was opened after World War II. It is unknown at this time if the artifacts on site were damaged.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation
