Operation School Bell provides South Lake Tahoe students with much-needed clothing

The Assistance League Sierra Foothills (ALSF) helps to transform the lives of youth and seniors in El Dorado County through six philanthropic programs. One of those programs, Operation School Bell, provides clothing to students in all school districts and has helped those attending Lake Tahoe Unified School District since 2011. This past year, over 200 children were able to go shopping in a "store" set up at the South Tahoe Association of Realtors office.

The closing of Kmart was a new challenge but the ALSF volunteers were able to organize the shopping event where selected students could pick out a new winter jacket, socks, and undergarments. If a jacket wasn't available they could still order a new pair of sneakers or winter boots which were delivered to their school.

Plans are already being made for how to accommodate these students in this area for next year without a major local retailer.

ALSF is currently seeking donations to help programs like Operation School Bell. They are also holding the Gardens of the Hill tour June 4-5 and are seeking silent auction and raffle donations. The raffle has themed baskets filled with items, and the online auction allows the group to offer larger items such as trips, dinners, services, and goods to further entice both those able to attend the event and those unable to enjoy the beautiful gardens the days of the event.
