Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is looking for cyclists to join their Climate Ride California team to cycle through wine country May 17-20, 2014. Riders will help raise awareness of climate change, alternative modes of transportation and the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue.

League staff member Seth Chanin will be captaining Team Keep Tahoe Blue.

“As a rider on Team Keep Tahoe Blue, you’ll have a unique opportunity to raise awareness of climate change, an important issue affecting Lake Tahoe,” Chanin said. “I’m a California native and avid skier, cyclist, and paddler. Lake Tahoe has always been a truly special place for me. We want to keep snow falling in the mountains during winter, and cool clear water along our beaches during the summer. If you feel the same way, Climate Ride is a perfect opportunity to show your support for Keeping Tahoe Blue, combating climate change, and promoting cycling, while participating in an incredible four-day journey with like-minded people.”

All are welcome to join the team. Participants will have the unique honor of wearing a Keep Tahoe Blue jersey as they spend four days touring wine country from San Francisco to Sacramento on a fully supported ride. Those who prefer to get involved without getting on a bike can support the fundraising efforts of individual Keep Tahoe Blue riders by visiting our team page at ClimateRide.org. Climate change is one of the biggest threats to Lake Tahoe. Researchers have documented increases in average water and air temperatures. Warmer water during the summer is causing algae blooms and providing a more hospitable habitat for invasive weeds and non-native fish. During the winter, more precipitation is falling as rain rather than snow, and the potential for polluting floods has increased.

The League works to reduce carbon emissions by promoting cycling-related events and groups throughout the year, attracting funding for bike trails, and advocating for transportation planning that gets people out of their cars.

“All of the League’s advocacy, education and collaboration efforts to combat pollution, promote restoration, tackle invasive species and protect Tahoe’s shoreline help bolster the lake’s resiliency against the unknowns of climate change,” said Deputy Director Jesse Patterson.
