Suspected drunk driver threatens police after crashing vehicle in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man is currently at Barton Hospital after rolling his vehicle and threatening police with a knife on Sunday evening.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was dispatched to the area of Ski Run Boulevard and Pioneer Trail after witnesses called them about a possible drunk driver on April 14, 2019.

At 5:53 p.m. officers were headed to the area when they were called about the same vehicle driving through the mobile home park at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Blackwood Rd.

The driver made it out of the mobile home park and down Blackwood Road and five minutes later rolled their Jeep on in front of Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship near the Herbert Avenue intersection.

As police arrived the 27-year-old male driver got out and started running towards Glenwood Way. Officers caught up with him and the suspect pulled out a knife and confronted them. The unidentified man told officers he wanted to die, according to SLTPD Sgt. Nick Carlquist.

Instead of shooting, SLTPD used a taser on the suspect to detain him. He was then transported to Barton Hospital where he is currently being held on a mental health evaluation.

It is unknown at this time if the man will be arrested or given mental health treatment.
