Roadwork schedule for $5.5M Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After this summer's work is completed on Sierra Boulevard, those driving, walking and riding on the road will enjoy sidewalks, Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and see the new water quality improvements.

The $5.5 million project on the .6 mile long Sierra Boulevard is funded mostly by grants.

Contractor Herback General Engineering will start mobilization of equipment, site surveying, installation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and general preparation for construction activity will begin next week with work beginning May 1.

Their schedule shows they intend to begin project construction at the southerly end of the project. Herback plans on concentrating their effort in three distinct sections of Sierra Blvd as follows:

A. Barbara Avenue to Alma Avenue – May 1 through June 20
B. Alma Avenue to Armstrong Avenue – June 21 through August 7
C. Armstrong Avenue to Palmira Avenue – August 7 through October 15

Work will begin with pulverizing the pavement surface within Section A and removing pulverized materials and existing earth down to the subgrade elevation. Water system improvements and drainage improvements will be constructed following the grading work. Southwest Gas Company will also be replacing their gas main and services via an independent gas main contractor. Electrical and landscape conduit installation will also occur as a part of the utility installation effort. When construction of subsurface and surface utilities are complete, the pulverized structural base will be placed back into the roadway and compacted within Section A. As utility construction within Section A is completed, the effort will shift to Section B.

The same procedures will be repeated within Section B and C.

Street paving is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. Should all go as planned, the project is scheduled to be complete before the end of October 2019.

During construction hours of each section, travel through the section receiving concentrated construction effort is not advised. Access will be maintained to residents and to the Sierra Community Church during construction.

Long waits of up to an hour or more could occur in the sections receiving concentrated construction effort so be prepared.

In the meantime, CalTrans will be working at the north end of Sierra Blvd., installing a new traffic signal, sidewalks and water improvement projects.
