Fundraising campaign started to keep Emerald Bay Bar & Grill in business

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Times are tough for many during the coronavirus pandemic with small businesses struggling to make ends meet when unable to have their doors open.

One of those businesses is Emerald Bay Bar & Grill at 888 SR89 in South Lake Tahoe.

Formerly known at Brother's Place, owner Spencer Weiss and his family and friends have turned to GoFundMe as a way to get donations and save the business.

Weiss has tried to figure out a way to offer food to go and keep the lights on and staff paid, but it hasn't worked out and the business was losing money by offering "to go" orders. Since a large part of their sales are generated through liquor, beer and wine, Weiss said it didn't work. He was then looking to May 1 as a date to open with but Shelter in Place orders are being extended, it may be mid-May or later, depending on the Governor's reopening plan.

"With this news, we are fearful of going under and losing our business that we have worked so hard for," said Weiss. "Any donation is accepted, even high-fives. Money generated will go directly to paying rent, employees, and utilities to keep the business ready for operation when the orders are lifted."

Weiss said he had a "heavy heart" in asking for financial help. He was working in the kitchen for several years before saving enough money to buy the 39-year-old bar and restaurant. Weiss has been living in South Lake for the past 15 years and has participated in many local fundraisers.

"We have applied for all available grants and loans and we are awaiting response for approval or denial," said Weiss.

To date, 47 people have donated almost $8,000. Fund organizers hope to raise $30,000 to keep the popular bar and restaurant in business.
