High Sierra Softball kicks off season at Soroptimist Stadium

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The High Sierra Softball League (HSSL) kicked off their season on Sunday, April 21 at Soroptimist Stadium: Home of Girls Softball at the South Tahoe Middle School. Each of the 12 teams was introduced as they entered the field. This year, over 130 girls are playing in the league which is for ages 5-16.

During the opening ceremony, HSSL President Al Martinez presented Steve Weiss, with a special plaque to honor his 50 years of involvement in youth sports as a coach and mentor. Many of those years were in South Lake Tahoe. As a surprise, Steve's daughter Kylee Finnegan and two players went to home plate as Steve was joined by his granddaughters to throw out the first pitch, marking the next generation of softball players.

Members from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club were on hand to watch the softball field they've been working so hard on renovating be used by the large group of girls players. To date, they've raised $325,000 for the current renovation. SISLT also donated $2,500 in scholarships to help more girls play.

To fund the field's warm-up area, SISLT is selling outfield sponsorship banners and collecting community donations. You can buy a 2024 sponsorship banner at sislt.org/banner-donation/ to advertise your business or write an empowering message to support our community girls and women who use the field. For any questions, contact SISLT’s Softball Committee at Softball.SISLT@gmail.com or learn more about the renovation at www.sislt.org/softball-field/.
